Description
INXS's 1985 album Listen Like Thieves marked a pivotal moment in the band's career, both artistically and commercially. By this point, the Australian rock group had already established themselves as a force to be reckoned with, but this album saw them refining their sound and taking a bold step towards the global stage. Produced by Chris Thomas, who had previously worked with acts like The Beatles and Pink Floyd, Listen Like Thieves captures the band at a moment of creative synergy, blending their signature new wave and rock influences with a more polished and radio-friendly approach.
The album opens with "What You Need", a track that became one of INXS's most iconic songs. Its infectious groove and Michael Hutchence's charismatic vocals set the tone for the record, showcasing the band's ability to craft songs that are both danceable and emotionally resonant. This track, in particular, helped propel the band into the international spotlight, reaching the top 5 on the Billboard Hot 100 in the United States.
Throughout the album, the band demonstrates their knack for combining tight, funky rhythms with anthemic choruses. Tracks like "Listen Like Thieves" and "Kiss the Dirt (Falling Down the Mountain)" highlight their ability to balance introspective lyrics with a driving, energetic sound. The production on the album is crisp and dynamic, allowing each member's contributions to shine. Andrew Farriss's keyboard work and Tim Farriss's guitar riffs are particularly noteworthy, providing a rich sonic backdrop for Hutchence's emotive delivery.
One of the standout aspects of Listen Like Thieves is its cohesiveness. While each track has its own distinct character, the album flows seamlessly from start to finish, creating a listening experience that feels both varied and unified. The band's chemistry is palpable, and it's clear that they were firing on all cylinders during the recording process.
The album's success was a turning point for INXS, solidifying their status as one of the leading bands of the 1980s. It paved the way for their subsequent album, Kick, which would go on to achieve even greater acclaim and commercial success. However, Listen Like Thieves remains a vital part of their discography, capturing a moment of transition and growth that would define their sound for years to come.
In retrospect, Listen Like Thieves is a testament to INXS's ability to innovate and adapt while staying true to their roots. It's an album that continues to resonate with listeners, offering a snapshot of a band on the cusp of greatness. Whether you're a longtime fan or a newcomer to their music, this record is a must-listen, showcasing the talent and vision that made INXS one of the most enduring acts of their era.
