Description

INXS's third studio album, Shabooh Shoobah, released in October 1982, marked a pivotal moment in the band's career. It was the record that propelled them from being a promising Australian act to gaining international recognition. The album showcases the band's ability to blend rock, new wave, and funk into a sound that was distinctly their own, setting the stage for their later global success.

From the opening track, "The One Thing", it's clear that INXS had honed their craft. The song's infectious groove, Michael Hutchence's charismatic vocals, and the tight interplay between the band members make it a standout. It's no surprise that "The One Thing" became their first single to chart in the United States, peaking at number 30 on the Billboard Hot 100. This track alone encapsulates the energy and style that would come to define INXS.

Another highlight is "Don't Change", a song that has endured as one of the band's most beloved tracks. Its anthemic quality and heartfelt lyrics resonate deeply, and it remains a staple in their live performances. The song's driving rhythm and uplifting melody make it a perfect closer for the album, leaving listeners on a high note.

The production on Shabooh Shoobah is polished yet retains a raw edge, thanks to the collaboration with producer Mark Opitz. The album was recorded in Sydney, Australia, and mixed in New York, which perhaps contributed to its international appeal. The band's chemistry is evident throughout, with Andrew Farriss's keyboards and Kirk Pengilly's saxophone adding unique textures to the songs, while the rhythm section of Garry Gary Beers on bass and Jon Farriss on drums provides a solid foundation.

Tracks like "Spy of Love" and "Black and White" showcase the band's versatility, blending moody atmospheres with catchy hooks. The album's title, Shabooh Shoobah, is as enigmatic as some of its lyrics, adding to the mystique of the record. It's a phrase that doesn't have a direct meaning but captures the playful and experimental spirit of the band at the time.

Critically, Shabooh Shoobah was well-received, earning praise for its innovative sound and strong songwriting. It was a commercial success in Australia, reaching number 5 on the Kent Music Report Albums Chart, and it also charted in the US, a significant achievement for an Australian band at the time. The album's success laid the groundwork for their subsequent albums, particularly The Swing and Listen Like Thieves, which would further cement their status as international rock stars.

Listening to Shabooh Shoobah today, it's clear why it remains a fan favourite. The album captures a band on the cusp of greatness, brimming with confidence and creativity. It's a testament to INXS's talent and vision, and it continues to hold up as a classic of the early '80s rock era.
