Description

INXS's fourth studio album, The Swing, released in April 1984, marked a pivotal moment in the band's career. By this point, the Australian rock outfit had already begun to establish themselves as a force to be reckoned with, but it was this record that truly catapulted them into the international spotlight. With its infectious blend of new wave, rock, and funk influences, The Swing showcased the band's growing confidence and their ability to craft songs that were both radio-friendly and artistically ambitious.

One of the most striking aspects of The Swing is its production. The album was produced by Nick Launay, who had previously worked with acts like Midnight Oil and Public Image Ltd. Launay brought a polished yet edgy sound to the record, perfectly complementing the band's evolving style. The use of layered instrumentation, dynamic arrangements, and a touch of experimentation helped to create a sound that was both contemporary and timeless. Tracks like "Original Sin" exemplify this approach, with its driving rhythm, catchy melody, and socially conscious lyrics. The song, which features backing vocals from Daryl Hall of Hall & Oates, became a massive hit and remains one of INXS's most iconic tracks.

Beyond "Original Sin", the album is packed with standout moments. "I Send a Message" is a punchy, upbeat track with an irresistible groove, while "Burn for You" showcases the band's knack for crafting emotive, melodic rock songs. "Dancing on the Jetty" and "Johnson's Aeroplane" highlight the band's willingness to experiment with different textures and moods, adding depth and variety to the album. Throughout, Michael Hutchence's charismatic vocals and the band's tight musicianship shine, making each track feel distinct yet cohesive within the album's overall sound.

The Swing was a commercial success, particularly in Australia, where it topped the charts and solidified INXS's status as one of the country's biggest bands. Internationally, the album helped to lay the groundwork for the band's later success, as they continued to refine their sound and expand their audience. The critical reception was also positive, with many praising the band's growth and the album's production quality.

Listening to The Swing today, it's clear why it remains a beloved part of INXS's discography. The album captures a band on the cusp of greatness, blending their early new wave influences with a more mature and confident approach to songwriting. It's a record that not only defined a moment in the band's career but also left a lasting impact on the music landscape of the 1980s. For fans of INXS or anyone looking to explore the era's music, The Swing is an essential listen.
