Description
Kings of Leon - Come Around Sundown 2xLP Vinyl Record
"Come Around Sundown," the fifth studio album by Kings of Leon, was released on October 15, 2010. This album followed the massive success of their 2008 release, "Only by the Night," which catapulted the band to international fame with hits like "Sex on Fire" and "Use Somebody." With "Come Around Sundown," the band faced the challenge of living up to the high expectations set by their previous work.
The album opens with "The End," a track that sets a contemplative tone with its atmospheric sound and introspective lyrics. From the start, it's clear that Kings of Leon are exploring new musical territories while still maintaining their signature Southern rock vibe. The Followill brothers—Caleb, Nathan, Jared, and their cousin Matthew—bring their familial chemistry to the forefront, creating a cohesive sound that is both familiar and fresh.
One of the standout tracks on the album is "Radioactive," which was also the lead single. The song features a driving rhythm and anthemic chorus, capturing the band's ability to craft catchy, radio-friendly rock songs. "Radioactive" received a Grammy nomination for Best Rock Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocal, highlighting its impact and popularity.
Another notable track is "Pyro," which showcases Caleb Followill's emotive vocal delivery and the band's knack for building tension and release within their songs. The lyrics delve into themes of redemption and introspection, resonating with listeners on a deeper level.
Critically, "Come Around Sundown" received mixed reviews. Some praised the album for its polished production and the band's willingness to experiment with new sounds, while others felt it didn't quite capture the raw energy of their earlier work. Publications like Rolling Stone and NME acknowledged the band's growth but noted that the album sometimes felt too polished, lacking the gritty edge that initially drew fans to their music.
Despite the mixed critical reception, "Come Around Sundown" was a commercial success. It debuted at number two on the Billboard 200 chart and topped the charts in several countries, including the UK and Canada. The album's success further cemented Kings of Leon's status as one of the leading rock bands of the 2010s.
In terms of production, "Come Around Sundown" was recorded in New York City with producers Angelo Petraglia and Jacquire King, who had previously worked with the band on "Only by the Night." The production quality is top-notch, with a rich, layered sound that complements the band's evolving musical style.
One interesting tidbit about the album is its cover art, which features a serene beach scene at sunset. This imagery reflects the album's title and the band's Southern roots, evoking a sense of nostalgia and longing that permeates many of the tracks.
Overall, "Come Around Sundown" is a solid entry in Kings of Leon's discography. While it may not have reached the iconic status of "Only by the Night," it showcases the band's growth and willingness to explore new musical directions. For fans of Kings of Leon, the album offers a mix of anthemic rock songs and introspective ballads, making it a worthwhile listen.
