Description

The Rolling Stones’ "Licked Live In NYC" is a thrilling testament to the band’s enduring power and charisma, capturing a moment in time that showcases their legendary live performance prowess. Recorded during their 2003 tour, this album is a vibrant snapshot of the Stones at a time when they were still very much at the top of their game, delivering a high-energy show that fans have come to expect from one of rock's most iconic bands.

The album features a selection of tracks that span the Stones’ extensive catalog, including classics like "Jumpin' Jack Flash," "Brown Sugar," and "Start Me Up." Each song is delivered with a raw energy that is palpable, reminding listeners why the Stones have remained a dominant force in rock music for over five decades. The live setting allows for a certain spontaneity, and you can hear the band feeding off the crowd's energy, which adds an extra layer of excitement to the performance.

One of the standout aspects of "Licked Live In NYC" is the production quality. Recorded at the Madison Square Garden, the album captures the essence of a live Stones concert with clarity and depth. The mix allows Mick Jagger's charismatic vocals to shine, while Keith Richards and Ronnie Wood's guitar interplay is as tight and electrifying as ever. Charlie Watts, the heartbeat of the band, drives the rhythm with his signature style, providing a solid foundation that allows the other members to soar. The album is a reminder of Watts' incredible talent, especially given his passing in 2021, making this recording even more poignant for fans.

Critics have praised the album for its authenticity and the way it encapsulates the Stones' live experience. Publications like Rolling Stone and NME have highlighted the band’s ability to connect with their audience, and this album is no exception. The energy of the crowd is infectious, and you can almost feel the excitement radiating from the speakers. Jagger’s stage presence is magnetic, and his banter with the audience adds a personal touch that makes the listener feel like they are part of the concert.

Among the fan favorites on the album, "Sympathy for the Devil" stands out as a highlight. The song’s dark, hypnotic groove is enhanced by the live setting, and Jagger’s performance is nothing short of mesmerizing. The way he interacts with the audience during this track is a masterclass in showmanship. Another notable moment is the rendition of "You Can't Always Get What You Want," which features a gospel choir, elevating the performance to a spiritual level that resonates deeply with listeners.

The album also includes a few surprises, such as the inclusion of "Street Fighting Man," which showcases the band’s political edge and relevance even in the 21st century. The live arrangement breathes new life into the track, making it feel as urgent and necessary as it did when it was first released in the late 1960s. This ability to reinterpret their classics while maintaining their essence is a testament to the Stones’ artistry and adaptability.

"Licked Live In NYC" is not just a collection of live tracks; it’s a celebration of a band that has not only survived but thrived through the decades. The album serves as a reminder of the Stones' cultural significance and their ability to unite generations of fans through their music. It’s a must-listen for anyone who appreciates rock and roll, and it stands as a proud addition to the band’s extensive discography.

In conclusion, this live album encapsulates the spirit of The Rolling Stones—unapologetically bold, endlessly entertaining, and forever iconic. Whether you’re a lifelong fan or a newcomer to their music, "Licked Live In NYC" is a powerful reminder of why the Stones are often referred to as the greatest rock and roll band in the world. It’s a vibrant, electrifying experience that captures the essence of what it means to be part of a live rock concert, and it’s sure to leave listeners wanting more.
