Description

"Living in the 70's" by Skyhooks is an album that not only marked a significant turning point in Australian rock music but also captured the zeitgeist of the 1970s with its bold, irreverent lyrics and glam rock style. Released in October 1974, this debut album from the Melbourne-based band Skyhooks was a breath of fresh air in the Australian music scene, which at the time was dominated by more traditional rock and pop sounds.

The album's impact was immediate and profound, largely due to its unique sound and the controversial, yet strikingly honest lyrics penned by bassist and primary songwriter Greg Macainsh. The songs on "Living in the 70's" tackled themes that were considered taboo at the time, such as suburban life, sexual escapades, and societal norms, all delivered with a sense of humor and a sharp, satirical edge. This bold approach not only set the band apart but also resonated with the younger generation, making Skyhooks a household name in Australia.

One of the standout aspects of "Living in the 70's" is its production. Produced by Ross Wilson, the album features a mix of guitar-driven tracks complemented by theatrical and flamboyant vocals from lead singer Shirley Strachan. The production quality brought out the best in songs like "Horror Movie," which became a hit single and is often remembered for its catchy chorus and vivid storytelling, painting a picture of the nightly news as a horror show.

The album opens with the title track, "Living in the 70's," which sets the tone with its commentary on the era's lifestyle and societal expectations. Other notable tracks include "You Just Like Me Cos I'm Good in Bed" and "Balwyn Calling," which provide insights into the suburban Melbourne lifestyle with a mix of cynicism and humor. The track "Ego is Not a Dirty Word" would later appear on their second album but was emblematic of the band's cheeky attitude and lyrical style.

Critically, "Living in the 70's" was well-received, with many praising its innovative approach to rock music and its ability to push boundaries both musically and lyrically. The album's success was also reflected in its sales, as it went on to sell over 200,000 copies, earning it a place as one of the best-selling Australian albums of the 70s. It also led to Skyhooks winning the 1975 TV Week King of Pop Award for Best Australian Group, cementing their status in the annals of Australian music history.

Despite some tracks being banned from radio play due to their explicit content, the album's popularity did not wane. This controversy arguably fueled its success, as it sparked debates about censorship and artistic freedom, themes that were very much in line with the rebellious spirit of the 1970s.

"Living in the 70's" not only launched Skyhooks' career but also had a lasting influence on Australian music. It opened the door for more experimental sounds and provocative themes in the mainstream music scene. The album is often credited with helping to define the Australian rock sound of the 70s, a testament to its quality and impact.

In conclusion, "Living in the 70's" by Skyhooks is more than just an album; it's a cultural artifact that captures the essence of a pivotal era in Australian history. With its daring lyrics, vibrant production, and unforgettable melodies, it remains a landmark album that continues to be celebrated and studied for its contributions to music and culture. Whether you're a longtime fan or a newcomer to Australian rock, "Living in the 70's" is an essential listen that encapsulates the spirit of an entire decade.
