Description
Cut in 1965 with producer Mickie Most, Animal Tracks finds The Animals sharpening their R&B bite into something moodier and more deliberate. For Miss Caulker is the tell: Burdon leans into the piano-and-organ hush, and you can hear the little inhale before he drags out the final line. Flip to Bright Lights, Big City and catch Chas Chandler’s bass sneaking a half-step walk into the turnaround; it’s small, but it changes the swagger. Their Ray Charles nods land too, especially the brassy swing of Hallelujah I Love Her So.
This pressing does them a favour, with low end that sits deeper and imaging that snaps the band into a tighter stage. Burdon’s baritone gets a bit more air around it, which suits these slower, late-night takes.
If you’d rather order online, you can buy The Animals records online with us.
File this next to early Stones for that British R&B era where covers and originals were bleeding together, but Animal Tracks leans blues-club intimate instead of full-tilt stomp. It’s a strong snapshot of a band between hit-making and something rawer, and it holds up whether you’re catching up on the catalogue or filling a gap on the shelf.
