The release of *Bridges to Bremen* in 2019, as part of the band’s ongoing effort to share their extensive live archives, offers fans a chance to experience a concert that many consider one of their best performances from the late '90s.
The album features a setlist that is a delightful mix of classic hits and deeper cuts, reflecting the band’s ability to engage with their audience while also showcasing their musical evolution. Opening with the electrifying “Jumpin’ Jack Flash,” the album immediately sets a high-energy tone that doesn’t let up. The band’s chemistry is palpable, with Mick Jagger’s dynamic stage presence and Keith Richards’ iconic guitar riffs leading the charge. The interplay between Jagger and Richards is a highlight throughout the album, reminding listeners of the unique bond that has kept the Stones together for over five decades.
One of the standout tracks is “You Can’t Always Get What You Want,” which features a powerful choir backing that elevates the performance to a spiritual level. The song’s themes of longing and acceptance resonate deeply, and the live rendition captures the audience’s emotional investment perfectly. Another gem is “Tumbling Dice,” where the band’s groove is infectious, and the crowd’s enthusiasm is almost tangible through the speakers. The way the band interacts with the audience during this track is a testament to their showmanship and ability to create a communal experience.
The production quality of *Bridges to Bremen* is impressive, especially considering it was recorded in the late '90s. The sound is crisp, allowing each instrument to shine while maintaining the rawness that live recordings should have. The album was produced by the band’s long-time collaborator, Don Was, who has a knack for capturing the essence of the Stones’ live sound.
