Description

When The Rolling Stones released "Tattoo You" in August 1981, they were already rock legends, but this album marked a significant moment in their storied career. It’s often seen as a return to form after the somewhat experimental and less commercially successful "Emotional Rescue" and "Some Girls." With "Tattoo You," the Stones delivered a collection of tracks that not only showcased their rock and roll prowess but also highlighted their ability to adapt and evolve with the times.

The album opens with the iconic "Start Me Up," a track that has become synonymous with the band. Its infectious riff and driving beat set the tone for the entire record, and it’s hard to believe that this song was initially written for a commercial. The energy is palpable, and Mick Jagger’s vocals are as commanding as ever, making it a staple in their live performances. The song’s success was a testament to the band’s enduring appeal, reaching the top of the charts and becoming a fan favorite.

One of the most interesting aspects of "Tattoo You" is its production. The album was primarily recorded during the sessions for previous albums, with many of the tracks being reworked and polished. This gives the album a unique feel, as it combines the raw energy of their earlier work with a more polished, contemporary sound. The production team, including the legendary Chris Kimsey, played a crucial role in shaping the final product, ensuring that each track had its own distinct character while still feeling cohesive.

Tracks like "Waiting on a Friend" and "Tops" showcase a more reflective side of the Stones. "Waiting on a Friend" is particularly poignant, featuring a laid-back groove and a saxophone solo that adds a layer of sophistication. The lyrics reflect a sense of longing and introspection, a departure from the more hedonistic themes often associated with the band. It’s a reminder that even rock icons can have moments of vulnerability, and this track resonates deeply with listeners.

"Tattoo You" also features standout tracks like "Little T&A" and "Hang Fire," which are infused with the band’s signature swagger. "Little T&A" is a playful homage to Jagger’s romantic escapades, while "Hang Fire" addresses the struggles of everyday life, a theme that many fans can relate to. The blend of personal storytelling with catchy hooks is a hallmark of the Stones’ songwriting, and it shines through on this album.

Critically, "Tattoo You" was well-received, with many praising its return to form. Rolling Stone magazine lauded the album for its energy and cohesion, noting that it felt like a celebration of the band’s legacy while still pushing forward. The album also performed well commercially, reaching the top of the charts in several countries and solidifying the Stones’ status as rock royalty.

Interestingly, the album cover, designed by Peter Corriston, is a striking visual that complements the music perfectly. The cover features a tattooed Jagger, which not only reflects the album's title but also symbolizes the band's rebellious spirit. The artwork has become iconic in its own right, often cited as one of the best album covers of the era.

In the years since its release, "Tattoo You" has continued to resonate with fans and critics alike. It’s often celebrated as one of the Stones’ best works, a testament to their ability to craft timeless rock music. The album has also been included in various lists of the greatest albums of all time, further cementing its place in music history.

As we look back on "Tattoo You," it’s clear that this album is more than just a collection of songs; it’s a reflection of a band that has weathered the storms of fame, fortune, and the ever-changing landscape of music. The Rolling Stones proved once again that they could not only survive but thrive, creating an album that remains a beloved classic in their extensive catalog. Whether you’re a lifelong fan or a newcomer to their music, "Tattoo You" is an essential listen that captures the essence of rock and roll.
