Description
The Rolling Stones’ album "The Rolling Stones, Now!" is a vibrant testament to the band’s early sound and their burgeoning identity as rock icons. Released in February 1965, this album captures a pivotal moment in music history, showcasing the Stones’ raw energy and their ability to blend rock, blues, and rhythm and blues into a compelling package that would set the stage for their legendary career.
From the opening track, “Everybody Needs Somebody to Love,” the album bursts forth with a frenetic energy that is infectious. This cover of Solomon Burke’s classic is a perfect example of how the Stones were able to take existing material and infuse it with their own unique style. Mick Jagger’s impassioned vocals, combined with the tight instrumentation from Keith Richards, Brian Jones, Bill Wyman, and Charlie Watts, create a sound that is both familiar and fresh. The band’s interpretation of the song is a celebration of love and longing, and it sets the tone for the rest of the album.
One of the standout tracks is undoubtedly “As Tears Go By,” which showcases a softer side of the Stones. Written by Jagger, Richards, and Rolling Stones’ frequent collaborator, Rolling Stones’ frequent collaborator, the song features lush strings and a haunting melody that contrasts sharply with the more raucous tracks on the album. It’s a poignant ballad that highlights Jagger’s vocal range and emotional depth, proving that the Stones were not just a rock band, but also capable of crafting beautiful, introspective songs.
The album also features a number of other notable covers, including “Little Red Rooster” and “You Can’t Catch Me.” The Stones’ rendition of “Little Red Rooster,” originally by Willie Dixon, is a bluesy, slow-burning track that allows the band to showcase their roots. Brian Jones’ slide guitar work is particularly noteworthy here, adding a layer of depth and authenticity to the performance. The way the band interprets these classic songs speaks volumes about their respect for the blues tradition while simultaneously pushing it into new territories.
Critically, "The Rolling Stones, Now!" was well-received upon its release, with many praising the band’s energy and musicianship. It was a significant step forward from their debut album, showcasing their growth as artists and their ability to craft a cohesive collection of songs. The album reached number 1 on the UK Albums Chart, solidifying the Stones’ place in the pantheon of rock music.
What’s fascinating about this album is the context in which it was created. The mid-1960s were a time of great change in music, with the British Invasion in full swing. The Rolling Stones were often seen as the bad boys of rock, contrasting sharply with the more polished image of The Beatles. This album encapsulates that rebellious spirit, with its gritty sound and raw emotion. It’s a reflection of a time when rock music was evolving, and the Stones were at the forefront of that evolution.
In terms of production, the album was recorded at RCA Studios in Hollywood, where the band was able to experiment with their sound. The production techniques used on this album helped to create a more polished sound compared to their debut, while still retaining the live energy that the Stones were known for. The interplay between the instruments is tight, and the mix allows each member to shine, particularly Jagger’s vocals and Richards’ guitar work.
"The Rolling Stones, Now!" is not just an album; it’s a snapshot of a band on the rise, capturing their essence at a crucial moment in their career. It’s an album that resonates with fans old and new, reminding us of the power of rock and roll and the timeless appeal of The Rolling Stones. Whether you’re a lifelong fan or a newcomer to their music, this album is a must-listen, a vibrant piece of rock history that continues to inspire and entertain.
