Description
Keith Moon’s tom roll before the final chorus of Won’t Get Fooled Again still makes the room jump. On Who’s Next, The Who turns Pete Townshend’s abandoned Lifehouse ideas into their tightest, most playable set, produced with sharp ears by Glyn Johns. Baba O’Riley starts with that jittery synth grid then blooms into Daltrey’s big-hearted bark, while The Song Is Over gives Townshend his bruised, reflective turn. Sequencing is ruthless and satisfying, no fat to trim.
This LP pressing does the mix a favour, low end sits deeper and imaging snaps into place. Turn it up and the band feels centred and loud without the glare.

Context matters. 1971 classic rock rarely lands this focused, which is why it belongs right beside Led Zeppelin’s IV on your shelf. Take a late drive across Melbourne and it still feels modern and huge, yet the human scale stays intact. Small details keep you coming back: Moon’s cymbal chatter, Entwistle’s clipped slides, those vocal stacks that pop in the choruses.
