Description

Aerosmith's 1979 album Night in the Ruts is an intriguing chapter in the band's storied career. Coming off the success of their earlier albums like Toys in the Attic and Rocks, this record finds the band at a crossroads, both creatively and personally. The late '70s were a tumultuous time for Aerosmith, with internal tensions and substance abuse issues taking their toll. Despite these challenges, Night in the Ruts showcases the band's resilience and their ability to deliver a solid rock album, even under less-than-ideal circumstances.

The album opens with "No Surprize", a track that feels autobiographical, recounting the band's rise to fame. It's a gritty, bluesy rocker that sets the tone for the rest of the record. Aerosmith's signature sound—Steven Tyler's raspy vocals, Joe Perry's searing guitar work, and the tight rhythm section of Tom Hamilton and Joey Kramer—is on full display here. However, by the time the album was being completed, Perry had left the band, and his absence is felt on some of the later tracks. Nevertheless, the remaining members, along with producer Jack Douglas, managed to pull together a cohesive collection of songs.

One of the standout tracks is their cover of "Remember (Walking in the Sand)", originally by The Shangri-Las. Aerosmith's version adds a heavier, more dramatic edge to the '60s classic, with Tyler's emotive delivery and the band's dynamic arrangement breathing new life into the song. Another highlight is "Chiquita", which features a funky groove and showcases the band's ability to experiment with different styles while staying true to their rock roots.

The production on Night in the Ruts is rawer compared to their earlier albums, reflecting the chaotic circumstances under which it was made. This rawness, however, adds a certain charm to the record, giving it an unpolished, almost live feel. Tracks like "Cheese Cake" and "Bone to Bone (Coney Island White Fish Boy)" are prime examples of this, with their gritty riffs and energetic performances.

While the album didn't achieve the same commercial success as its predecessors, it has gained a cult following over the years. Fans and critics alike have come to appreciate its rough-around-the-edges quality and the glimpses it offers into a band navigating a difficult period. It's a testament to Aerosmith's talent and determination that they were able to produce an album of this calibre under such challenging circumstances.

Night in the Ruts may not be the first album that comes to mind when thinking of Aerosmith's discography, but it holds a special place for those who delve deeper into their catalogue. It's a record that captures a moment in time—a snapshot of a band weathering the storm and still managing to create compelling music. For anyone looking to explore Aerosmith beyond their biggest hits, this album is well worth a listen.
