Description
Beast In Black sharpened their neon‑lit power metal formula in February 2019 with From Hell With Love, their second full‑length for Nuclear Blast. Formed by guitarist and songwriter Anton Kabanen after his Battle Beast days, the band leans hard into hooky choruses, thick synths and a love of manga, especially Berserk. That mix shouldn’t work as well as it does, yet it turns into a rush that feels like late‑night arcade glamour welded to double‑kick drums.
The line‑up is tight and distinctive. Greek vocalist Yannis Papadopoulos handles the skyscraping melodies with ridiculous control, and he stacks harmonies with a pop singer’s ear for shine. Kabanen steers the writing and guitars, with Kasperi Heikkinen trading crisp leads, Máté Molnár anchoring the low end, and Atte Palokangas keeping the tempo clean and punchy. It is a polished sound, but not sterile. There is grit in the guitars and a clear love for classic metal theatrics.
Opener Cry Out for a Hero sets the pace straight away. The synth line glows like an Italo disco single, then the riff slams in and Yannis hits that high, bright register that has become a calling card. The title track, From Hell With Love, leans into that dance‑metal blend even harder. It is the sort of chorus that lodges in your head on the tram ride home, and it shows how the band can push the pop element without losing the bite. Sweet True Lies was one of the lead singles, and you can hear why. It sashays on a glittering keyboard motif, then the guitars kick the door in. If you grew up with both Judas Priest and 80s radio, this sweet spot makes perfect sense.
Die by the Blade is a fan favourite for a reason. It brings in the Berserk storytelling that runs through Kabanen’s lyrics, yet it keeps things physical with a galloping rhythm that feels built for festival fields. On the other side of the spectrum sits Oceandeep, a power ballad with real patience. The band strip back the shimmer and let Yannis carry the melody with a clean, aching tone, and it lands. Repentless brings the steel back with a sharper edge, a reminder that beneath the glossy synths there is still a heavy band pushing the engine.
Production choices matter on a record like this, and Kabanen knows his palette. He layers choirs, pads and arpeggiators around the riffs so the choruses explode, not just get louder. The result is a sound that feels cinematic without ballooning into mush. It is also why From Hell With Love vinyl is such a treat if you’re into a big, colourful presentation. The artwork pops at 12 inches, and the way those stacked vocals bloom on a good system can turn a lounge room into a small arena. If you’re trawling a Melbourne record store or browsing vinyl records Australia late at night, keep an eye out.
There is a fun bit of history tucked into certain editions too. The band recorded a cover of Robert Tepper’s No Easy Way Out, the Rocky IV classic, and it fits them like a spiked leather glove. That 80s heart‑on‑sleeve drama is already baked into their sound, so when they lean into a genuine period anthem, it slides right in.
Critical response in the metal press highlighted the band’s knack for sugar‑shot hooks and the way they blend Eurobeat colours with power metal muscle. Fans came along quickly, helped by eye‑catching videos for the singles and a touring schedule that showed these songs hit just as hard live. If you knew Kabanen’s writing from Battle Beast, the through‑line is clear, but the emphasis on bright synth textures and unabashed pop melody is more pronounced here. It is not irony. It is commitment to a hybrid that feels natural to them.
If you’re hunting Beast In Black vinyl, this is the one that crystallised their identity. It works front to back, with enough variety to keep the momentum and enough hooks to justify the sugar rush. For collectors looking to buy Beast In Black records online, From Hell With Love sits neatly alongside Berserker and later releases, and it is a handy gateway if you want to explore Beast In Black albums on vinyl. Spin it loud, let the chorus of Cry Out for a Hero ring out across the room, and you will get why this album turned casual listeners into diehards.
