Description

Benediction, the legendary British death metal band, has returned with their eighth studio album, "Scriptures." Released on October 16, 2020, this highly anticipated record marks their first full-length release in over a decade. With a rich history spanning over three decades, Benediction has consistently delivered crushing and uncompromising death metal, and "Scriptures" is no exception.

Clocking in at just under 50 minutes, "Scriptures" is a relentless onslaught of brutal riffs, thunderous drums, and guttural vocals. The album kicks off with the explosive track "Iterations of I," immediately setting the tone for what's to come. The band wastes no time in showcasing their signature sound, blending old-school death metal elements with a modern touch.

One of the standout aspects of "Scriptures" is the impeccable musicianship displayed by the band. The guitar work, courtesy of Darren Brookes and Peter Rewinski, is nothing short of exceptional. The duo delivers a barrage of crushing riffs, blistering solos, and memorable hooks throughout the album. The rhythm section, consisting of Dan Bate on bass and Giovanni Durst on drums, provides a solid foundation, driving the songs forward with precision and intensity.

Vocalist Dave Ingram, known for his work with Benediction in the '90s, makes a triumphant return on "Scriptures." His deep, growling vocals perfectly complement the heavy instrumentation, adding an extra layer of aggression and brutality to the album. Ingram's delivery is powerful and commanding, showcasing his experience and expertise in the genre.

Lyrically, "Scriptures" explores themes of societal decay, religious hypocrisy, and the darker aspects of human nature. The band's lyrics have always been thought-provoking, and this album is no exception. Tracks like "Stormcrow" and "Rabid Carnality" delve into the depths of human depravity, while "In Our Hands, the Scars" tackles the destructive nature of organized religion. The lyrics are intelligently crafted, adding depth and substance to the already crushing music.

Production-wise, "Scriptures" is top-notch. The album was mixed and mastered by Scott Atkins, who has worked with renowned metal acts such as Cradle of Filth and Behemoth. The sound is crisp, clear, and heavy, allowing each instrument to shine while maintaining the raw energy and aggression that defines Benediction's sound.

While "Scriptures" is undeniably a strong album, it does have a few moments that feel slightly repetitive. Some tracks blend together, lacking the distinctiveness that would make them stand out individually. However, this minor flaw does not detract significantly from the overall quality of the album.

In conclusion, Benediction's "Scriptures" is a powerful and unrelenting death metal offering that showcases the band's mastery of the genre. With their signature blend of old-school brutality and modern sensibilities, Benediction proves that they are still a force to be reckoned with. The album's impeccable musicianship, powerful vocals, and thought-provoking lyrics make it a must-listen for any death metal enthusiast. While it may not break new ground, "Scriptures" is a solid addition to Benediction's discography and a testament to their enduring legacy in the metal scene.
