Description
Billy Idol's compilation album "The Very Best Of - Idolize Yourself" is a celebration of his enduring legacy as one of the most iconic figures in rock and roll. Released on June 24, 2008, this collection brings together some of his most memorable hits, spanning his career from the early 1980s to the mid-2000s, and also includes two new tracks that were recorded specifically for this release.
Listening to this album is like taking a journey through the evolution of Billy Idol's sound and style. From the raw energy of "Rebel Yell" to the anthemic "White Wedding", the album showcases Idol's ability to craft songs that are both edgy and irresistibly catchy. His unique blend of punk rock attitude and pop sensibility is on full display here, and it's easy to see why he became such a defining figure of the MTV era.
The inclusion of "Dancing with Myself", originally recorded with his band Generation X, is a nod to his punk roots and a reminder of where it all began. This track, with its infectious rhythm and rebellious spirit, set the stage for Idol's solo career and remains a fan favourite to this day. Other standout tracks include "Eyes Without a Face", a hauntingly beautiful ballad that showcases a more introspective side of Idol, and "Flesh for Fantasy", which highlights his ability to blend rock with a touch of sensuality.
The two new tracks, "John Wayne" and "New Future Weapon", are a welcome addition to the compilation. They show that even decades into his career, Billy Idol still has the ability to create music that feels fresh and relevant. "John Wayne" in particular stands out with its driving beat and lyrics that pay homage to the legendary actor, while also reflecting Idol's own larger-than-life persona.
The production on the album is polished, yet it retains the raw energy that is so characteristic of Billy Idol's music. The remastering of the older tracks ensures that they sound as vibrant as ever, while the new songs fit seamlessly into the collection. The album flows well, making it a great listen from start to finish.
"The Very Best Of - Idolize Yourself" is not just a greatest hits album; it's a testament to Billy Idol's enduring appeal and his ability to evolve as an artist while staying true to his roots. For longtime fans, it's a nostalgic trip down memory lane, and for newcomers, it's the perfect introduction to his music. Whether you're blasting "Rebel Yell" at full volume or swaying to the melancholic strains of "Eyes Without a Face", this album is a reminder of why Billy Idol remains a rock icon.
