Description

Deftones' album "Around the Fur" was released on October 28, 1997, and it marked a significant moment in the evolution of alternative metal. This album followed their self-titled debut, "Adrenaline," and showcased a more refined sound that would help define the band’s identity in the years to come. With its blend of heavy riffs, atmospheric soundscapes, and Chino Moreno's haunting vocals, "Around the Fur" is often hailed as a classic in the genre.

From the very first track, "My Own Summer (Shove It)," listeners are thrust into a world of raw energy and emotion. The song's iconic opening riff is instantly recognizable and sets the tone for the rest of the album. It’s a track that captures the angst and frustration of youth, and it’s no wonder it became a staple in the band's live performances. The music video for this song also received significant airplay on MTV, helping to elevate the band's profile during the late '90s.

One of the standout tracks on the album is undoubtedly "Be Quiet and Drive (Far Away)." This song perfectly encapsulates the Deftones' ability to blend heavy instrumentation with melodic elements. The juxtaposition of heavy guitar riffs and ethereal melodies creates a dreamlike quality that is both captivating and intense. Lyrically, it speaks to themes of escape and longing, resonating with many fans who found solace in its emotional depth.

The production of "Around the Fur" is another aspect worth noting. Produced by Terry Date, who had previously worked with the band on their debut, the album features a polished yet gritty sound that enhances the overall listening experience. Date's expertise in capturing the band's dynamic range allows the heavier tracks to hit hard while still providing space for the more atmospheric moments. This balance is particularly evident in tracks like "Lhabia" and "Headup," which showcase the band's versatility and willingness to experiment with different sounds.

Critically, "Around the Fur" received positive reviews from major publications. Rolling Stone praised the album for its emotional intensity and innovative sound, while Alternative Press highlighted the band's ability to blend genres seamlessly. The album has since been recognized as a pivotal release in the nu-metal and alternative metal scenes, influencing countless bands that followed. It has been included in various "best of" lists, solidifying its status as a classic.

Interestingly, the album's cover art, featuring a striking image of a woman’s face, was designed by the band’s longtime collaborator, Frank Maddocks. The artwork complements the music perfectly, evoking a sense of mystery and allure that draws listeners in. It’s a visual representation of the themes explored in the album, making it not just a collection of songs but a cohesive artistic statement.

"Around the Fur" also holds cultural significance as it was released during a time when alternative music was gaining mainstream traction. The late '90s saw a surge in interest in heavier music, and Deftones were at the forefront of this movement. Their unique sound, which incorporated elements of shoegaze, post-hardcore, and metal, set them apart from their contemporaries and helped pave the way for future bands.

In terms of awards, while "Around the Fur" did not win any major awards at the time of its release, it has since been recognized in retrospective lists and discussions about the best albums of the 1990s. The album's impact on the music scene is undeniable, and it continues to resonate with fans old and new.

In conclusion, Deftones' "Around the Fur" is more than just an album; it’s a landmark in the world of alternative metal. Its blend of heavy and melodic elements, coupled with emotionally charged lyrics, makes it a timeless piece of art. Whether you’re a long-time fan or a newcomer to the band, this album is a must-listen that captures the essence of a transformative era in music.
