Description
Dio's "Donington '87" is a live album that captures the legendary performance of Ronnie James Dio and his band at the Monsters of Rock festival at Donington Park on August 22, 1987. This release is a treasure for fans of classic heavy metal, as it showcases Dio at the height of his powers, delivering a setlist that spans his illustrious career.
The album opens with "Dream Evil", the title track from Dio's fourth studio album, which had been released just a few months prior in July 1987. This track sets the tone for the concert, with its powerful riffs and Dio's unmistakable vocals. The energy of the live performance is palpable, and the crowd's enthusiasm adds to the experience. The setlist also includes iconic tracks like "Holy Diver", "Don't Talk to Strangers", and "Rainbow in the Dark", which are staples of Dio's repertoire and highlight his ability to craft songs that are both melodic and heavy.
One of the standout moments of the album is the medley of "The Last in Line" and "Children of the Sea", which seamlessly blends two of Dio's most beloved songs. This medley not only showcases Dio's vocal prowess but also the technical skill of his band, which at the time included Craig Goldy on guitar, Jimmy Bain on bass, Claude Schnell on keyboards, and Vinny Appice on drums. Each member of the band brings their own flair to the performance, creating a cohesive and dynamic sound.
The production of "Donington '87" captures the raw energy of the live performance while maintaining a clarity that allows each instrument to shine. The mix is well-balanced, with Dio's vocals front and centre, as they should be. The album also includes some of Dio's earlier work with Rainbow and Black Sabbath, such as "Man on the Silver Mountain" and "Heaven and Hell", which serve as a reminder of his incredible legacy and influence on the genre.
"Donington '87" is more than just a live album; it's a snapshot of a moment in time when Dio was at the peak of his career. The Monsters of Rock festival was a significant event in the heavy metal calendar, and Dio's performance that day is still remembered as one of the highlights of the festival's history. Listening to this album, you can almost feel the electricity in the air and the connection between the band and the audience.
For fans of Dio and classic heavy metal, "Donington '87" is an essential addition to their collection. It not only showcases the talent and charisma of Ronnie James Dio but also serves as a reminder of why he is considered one of the greatest vocalists in the history of rock music. Whether you're a long-time fan or new to Dio's music, this album is a must-listen.
