Description
Michael Schenker's album "My Years With UFO (50th Anniversary Celebration 1972-1978)" is a retrospective collection that highlights the influential period when Schenker was a pivotal member of the British rock band UFO. This compilation serves as a testament to Schenker's virtuosity and the significant impact he had on the band's sound during the 1970s, a time when UFO was transitioning from a space rock band to a hard rock powerhouse.
The album features a selection of tracks that showcase Schenker's guitar work, which was instrumental in defining UFO's sound. His tenure with the band began in 1973 when he joined as a teenager, bringing with him a fresh and innovative approach to guitar playing. Schenker's style is characterized by his melodic solos, precise technique, and the ability to blend hard rock with blues influences, which can be heard throughout the tracks on this compilation.
One of the standout tracks on the album is "Rock Bottom," a song that has become synonymous with UFO's live performances. Schenker's extended guitar solo in this track is often cited as one of the greatest in rock history, showcasing his ability to build tension and release with impeccable timing and emotion. Another highlight is "Doctor Doctor," a track that not only became a fan favorite but also served as a concert opener for many of UFO's shows. The song's catchy riff and Schenker's soaring lead work make it a quintessential example of his contribution to the band's success.
During Schenker's years with UFO, the band released several critically acclaimed albums, including "Phenomenon" (1974), "Force It" (1975), "No Heavy Petting" (1976), "Lights Out" (1977), and "Obsession" (1978). These albums are represented in the compilation, providing a comprehensive overview of Schenker's most productive years with the band. Each album contributed to UFO's growing reputation as one of the leading hard rock bands of the era, with Schenker's guitar playing being a major factor in their appeal.
The critical reception of Schenker's work with UFO has been overwhelmingly positive over the years. His guitar playing has been praised for its technical proficiency and emotional depth, influencing countless guitarists in the rock and metal genres. Schenker's ability to craft memorable riffs and solos helped elevate UFO's music, making it both commercially successful and critically respected.
Culturally, Schenker's work with UFO during this period is significant as it helped bridge the gap between the blues-based rock of the early 1970s and the emerging heavy metal sound that would dominate the late 1970s and 1980s. His influence can be heard in the work of later guitarists such as Kirk Hammett of Metallica and Dave Mustaine of Megadeth, who have cited Schenker as an inspiration.
"My Years With UFO (50th Anniversary Celebration 1972-1978)" not only celebrates Schenker's contributions to UFO but also serves as a reminder of the enduring legacy of his work. The album is a must-listen for fans of classic rock and guitar enthusiasts, offering a glimpse into a pivotal era in rock history. Schenker's ability to blend technical skill with emotive playing continues to resonate with listeners, ensuring that his work with UFO remains influential and relevant decades after its original release.
