Description
Parkway Drive - Don't Close Your Eyes LP Vinyl Record (Opaque Green Coloured Vinyl)
Parkway Drive, an Australian metalcore band, released an EP called "Don't Close Your Eyes" in 2004. Two songs from the EP, namely "Smoke 'Em If Ya Got 'Em" and "Hollow Man", were re-recorded and included in Parkway Drive's debut album "Killing with a Smile" and their 2010 album "Deep Blue", respectively. In "Deep Blue", "Hollow Man" is titled "Hollow" and features Marshall Lichtenwaldt, the vocalist of the American hardcore punk band, the Warriors.
Parkway Drive's debut album, "Don't Close Your Eyes," released in 2004, is a significant entry in the metalcore genre, marking the beginning of the band's journey from local Australian act to international heavyweights. This album, while not as polished as their later works, captures the raw energy and passion that would become the hallmark of Parkway Drive's sound.
"Don't Close Your Eyes" was initially released as an EP and later expanded into a full-length album. It showcases the band's early sound, characterized by aggressive guitar riffs, intense drumming, and Winston McCall's powerful vocals. The album was recorded at a time when the band was still finding its footing, and this rawness is part of its charm. The production, handled by Adam Dutkiewicz of Killswitch Engage, adds a layer of authenticity and grit that complements the band's style.
One of the standout tracks on the album is "Smoke 'Em If Ya Got 'Em," which has become a fan favorite over the years. The song features a relentless pace and a breakdown that is quintessentially Parkway Drive. Another notable track is "Hollow Man," which showcases the band's ability to blend melody with aggression, a skill they would continue to hone in their subsequent releases.
Critically, "Don't Close Your Eyes" received a warm reception, particularly within the metalcore community. While it may not have garnered mainstream attention at the time, it laid the groundwork for the band's future success. Fans and critics alike appreciated the album's raw energy and the potential it hinted at for the band's future.
Culturally, the album is significant as it represents the burgeoning Australian metalcore scene of the early 2000s. Parkway Drive, hailing from Byron Bay, Australia, was part of a wave of bands that brought international attention to the region's heavy music scene. "Don't Close Your Eyes" helped establish Parkway Drive as a leading force in this movement, paving the way for their later albums, which would achieve greater commercial success and critical acclaim.
In terms of production, the album was recorded in a relatively short period, with the band members often recounting stories of their DIY approach to music-making during this time. This hands-on, grassroots method of creating music is evident in the album's sound and is a testament to the band's dedication and passion.
Overall, "Don't Close Your Eyes" is an essential listen for fans of Parkway Drive and metalcore enthusiasts. It offers a glimpse into the early days of a band that would go on to become one of the genre's most influential acts. While it may not have the polish of their later albums, its raw energy and authenticity make it a compelling and enjoyable listen. For those interested in the evolution of metalcore and the rise of Parkway Drive, "Don't Close Your Eyes" is a significant piece of the puzzle.
