Description

Saxon’s self-titled debut album, released in 1979, is a cornerstone of the New Wave of British Heavy Metal (NWOBHM) movement, and it’s fascinating to see how it laid the groundwork for a band that would go on to become legends in the heavy metal scene. The album is a raw, energetic collection of tracks that showcases the band’s early sound, which is characterized by powerful guitar riffs, driving rhythms, and Biff Byford’s distinctive vocals.

From the opening track, "Rainbow Theme," you’re immediately drawn into the world Saxon is creating. It’s a brief instrumental that sets the stage for what’s to come, leading seamlessly into the hard-hitting "Frozen Rainbow." This track is a perfect example of the band’s ability to blend melody with aggression, featuring a catchy chorus that sticks with you long after the song has ended. The guitar work by Paul Quinn and Graham Oliver is particularly noteworthy here, as they deliver riffs that are both intricate and heavy, a hallmark of Saxon’s style.

One of the standout tracks on the album is undoubtedly "Big Teaser," which showcases the band’s knack for writing anthemic choruses. The song is a celebration of youthful exuberance and rebellion, and it’s hard not to feel energized listening to it. The production, handled by the band and the legendary producer, is raw yet polished enough to highlight the musicianship without losing the gritty edge that defines early heavy metal. It’s a sound that feels both timeless and of its era, capturing the spirit of late 70s rock.

"The Band Plays On" is another highlight, featuring a driving beat and a sense of urgency that encapsulates the live energy Saxon would become known for. The lyrics reflect the band’s dedication to their craft, and you can almost picture the crowd singing along in a smoky pub or a packed club. This track, like many others on the album, hints at the band’s future success and their ability to connect with fans through relatable themes.

Critics at the time recognized Saxon’s potential, with publications like Sounds and Kerrang! praising their energetic performances and songwriting. The album didn’t just resonate with fans; it also helped to solidify Saxon’s place in the burgeoning heavy metal scene alongside contemporaries like Iron Maiden and Judas Priest. The self-titled album is often cited as a significant release that helped to define the sound of NWOBHM, a genre that would go on to influence countless bands in the years to come.

Interestingly, the album cover, featuring a striking image of a warrior, perfectly encapsulates the themes of strength and defiance that run throughout the music. It’s a visual representation of the band’s identity, and it’s hard to imagine the album without it. The artwork, combined with the music, creates a cohesive package that speaks to the power of heavy metal as a genre.

As the years have gone by, Saxon’s debut has gained a cult following, with fans often revisiting it as a nostalgic reminder of the early days of heavy metal. The album has been reissued multiple times, and each time it finds a new audience, proving that the music is as relevant today as it was over four decades ago. Tracks like "Back to the Wall" and "Stallions of the Highway" have become fan favorites, often included in the band’s live sets, showcasing their enduring appeal.

In interviews, Biff Byford has reflected on the album with pride, noting how it was a labor of love for the band. The raw energy captured in those early recordings is something that resonates with both the band and their fans, creating a bond that has lasted through the years. Saxon’s self-titled debut is not just an album; it’s a testament to the spirit of heavy metal and the power of music to bring people together. It’s a must-listen for anyone looking to understand the roots of the genre and the legacy of one of its most enduring bands.
