Description
Saxon’s 1980 album "Wheels of Steel" stands as a monumental entry in the annals of heavy metal, capturing the raw energy and spirit of the burgeoning New Wave of British Heavy Metal (NWOBHM) movement. This album not only solidified Saxon’s place in the heavy metal pantheon but also showcased their ability to blend melodic hooks with hard-hitting riffs, a formula that would influence countless bands in the years to come.
From the opening track, "Motorcycle Man," the album revs up with a relentless energy that is hard to resist. The driving guitar riffs, coupled with Biff Byford’s powerful vocals, set the tone for what is to come. The song is a celebration of freedom and rebellion, themes that resonate throughout the album. It’s a quintessential metal anthem that captures the essence of youth and adventure, making it a fan favorite that still gets heads banging at live shows.
One of the standout tracks, "747 (Strangers in the Night)," showcases Saxon’s knack for storytelling through music. The song is a thrilling narrative about a plane journey, complete with soaring melodies and a chorus that invites sing-alongs. The dual guitar work of Paul Quinn and Graham Oliver is particularly noteworthy here, as they weave intricate harmonies that elevate the track to anthemic heights. This song, along with others on the album, helped to define the sound of Saxon and the NWOBHM scene, blending speed and melody in a way that was both accessible and powerful.
The title track, "Wheels of Steel," is another highlight, featuring a galloping rhythm that has become a signature of the band’s style. The lyrics reflect themes of determination and resilience, encapsulating the spirit of the metal community. The song’s infectious energy and memorable chorus make it a staple in Saxon’s live performances, and it’s easy to see why it has endured over the decades.
Production-wise, "Wheels of Steel" was recorded at the famous Utopia Studios in London, with producer Nigel Gray, who had previously worked with The Police. The production captures the rawness of the band’s live sound while also allowing the melodic elements to shine through. The album’s mix strikes a perfect balance, giving each instrument its due prominence without losing the overall heaviness that defines Saxon’s music.
Critically, "Wheels of Steel" received positive reviews upon its release, with many publications praising its energetic sound and memorable songwriting. It has since been recognized as one of the defining albums of the NWOBHM era, often cited alongside classics from Iron Maiden and Judas Priest. The album has been included in various lists of the greatest heavy metal albums of all time, further cementing its legacy.
Saxon’s influence on the heavy metal genre cannot be overstated. They paved the way for a generation of bands that followed, and their sound has been echoed in the music of countless artists. The album’s blend of hard rock and heavy metal elements helped to shape the sound of the 1980s and beyond, making it a crucial listen for anyone interested in the evolution of the genre.
In interviews, Biff Byford has reflected on the album’s impact, noting how it resonated with fans and helped to establish Saxon as a leading force in heavy metal. The band’s commitment to their craft and their ability to connect with their audience through powerful music is evident in every track on "Wheels of Steel."
As we look back on "Wheels of Steel," it’s clear that this album is not just a collection of songs; it’s a celebration of the heavy metal spirit. With its unforgettable riffs, anthemic choruses, and a sense of camaraderie that permeates the music, Saxon’s second album remains a timeless classic that continues to inspire and energize fans around the world. Whether you’re a long-time metalhead or a newcomer to the genre, "Wheels of Steel" is an essential listen that captures the heart and soul of heavy metal.
