Description

Skid Row’s "B-Side Ourselves" is a fascinating dive into the band’s creative psyche, showcasing their ability to reinterpret and pay homage to the music that shaped them while also revealing a more playful side. Released in 1992, this EP is a collection of covers that not only highlights the band’s influences but also serves as a testament to their musical versatility. It’s a project that feels both nostalgic and fresh, capturing the essence of the early '90s rock scene while also nodding to the past.

The EP opens with a raucous rendition of "Psycho Therapy" by the Ramones, a choice that immediately sets the tone for the rest of the album. Skid Row’s version is infused with their signature hard rock sound, yet it retains the punk energy of the original. The rawness of Sebastian Bach’s vocals shines through, delivering a performance that is both powerful and engaging. It’s a perfect introduction to the band’s take on the punk rock ethos, and it’s clear that they have a deep respect for the genre’s pioneers.

Following this energetic opener, the band takes on "Delivering the Goods" by Judas Priest, another bold choice that showcases their heavy metal roots. The guitar work here is particularly noteworthy, with Dave "Snake" Sabo and Scotti Hill delivering blistering riffs that pay homage to the original while also adding their own flair. The production, handled by the band themselves, captures the raw energy of a live performance, making it feel like you’re right there in the studio with them.

One of the standout tracks on the EP is their cover of "I Remember You," which is a reimagining of their own classic from their debut album. This version strips back some of the glam elements and presents a more acoustic, heartfelt interpretation. It’s a beautiful moment that showcases Bach’s vocal range and emotional depth, reminding listeners of the band’s ability to craft poignant ballads amidst their heavier material. This track is a fan favorite, and it’s easy to see why; it resonates with anyone who has experienced the bittersweet nature of love and nostalgia.

The EP also features a cover of "The Star Spangled Banner," which is a bold and unexpected choice. Skid Row’s rendition is both respectful and powerful, showcasing their ability to take a well-known piece and infuse it with their own identity. It’s a moment that feels particularly significant, especially considering the cultural climate of the early '90s, where rock music was often a vehicle for social commentary.

Critically, "B-Side Ourselves" received a warm reception, with many reviewers praising the band for their adventurous spirit and ability to reinterpret classic tracks. Publications like Kerrang! and Metal Hammer highlighted the EP as a testament to Skid Row’s musical influences, noting how the covers reflect the band’s diverse tastes and respect for rock history. It’s clear that this project was not just a cash grab or a filler release; it was a genuine exploration of the music that inspired them.

In interviews around the time of the EP’s release, Bach and Sabo expressed their excitement about the project, emphasizing how much fun they had recording these tracks. They spoke about the importance of honoring the bands that influenced them while also wanting to bring their own sound to these classics. This sense of joy and camaraderie is palpable throughout the EP, making it a delightful listen from start to finish.

"B-Side Ourselves" may not have the same commercial impact as Skid Row’s earlier albums, but it stands as a unique artifact in their discography. It’s a celebration of their roots and a reminder of the power of music to connect generations. For fans of the band, this EP is a must-have, offering a glimpse into the heart and soul of Skid Row during a pivotal time in their career. It’s a testament to their enduring legacy in the rock world, proving that even in the midst of changing musical landscapes, their passion for music remains unwavering.
