Description
Slade’s compilation album, *Sladest*, released in 1973, is a vibrant testament to the band’s explosive energy and their significant impact on the glam rock scene of the early 1970s. This collection not only showcases their most popular tracks but also encapsulates the essence of a band that thrived on exuberance and theatricality. For fans and newcomers alike, *Sladest* serves as a perfect introduction to Slade’s unique sound, characterized by catchy hooks, anthemic choruses, and a raw, infectious spirit.
The album opens with the iconic “Cum On Feel the Noize,” a track that became a defining anthem of the glam rock era. Its raucous energy and sing-along chorus are irresistible, and it’s no wonder that it topped the UK charts. The song’s infectious spirit is matched by its lyrical celebration of youth and rebellion, making it a timeless classic. Following this is “Look Wot You Dun,” another hit that showcases the band’s knack for crafting catchy melodies paired with a driving rock beat. The guitar riffs are sharp, and Noddy Holder’s distinctive vocals shine through, full of charisma and attitude.
One of the standout features of *Sladest* is its ability to capture the essence of Slade’s live performances. The band was known for their electrifying stage presence, and this compilation does a fantastic job of translating that energy into a studio format. Tracks like “Mama Weer All Crazee Now” and “Skweeze Me, Pleeze Me” are perfect examples of this, with their infectious rhythms and crowd-pleasing choruses that would have audiences singing along in unison. The production, handled by the band and their long-time collaborator Chas Chandler, is polished yet retains a raw edge that complements the band’s style perfectly.
The album also features some deeper cuts that highlight the band’s versatility. “Take Me Bak ‘Ome” is a poignant ballad that contrasts with the more raucous tracks, showcasing a softer side of Slade. The emotional depth in Holder’s voice, combined with the lush instrumentation, creates a moment of reflection amidst the high-energy anthems. This balance is part of what makes *Sladest* such a compelling listen; it’s not just a collection of hits, but a journey through the various facets of Slade’s musical identity.
Critically, *Sladest* was well-received, with many praising its ability to capture the spirit of the times. It was a commercial success, reaching high positions on the charts and solidifying Slade’s status as one of the leading bands of the glam rock movement. The album’s cover art, featuring the band in their flamboyant outfits, is iconic in its own right, perfectly encapsulating the visual aesthetic of glam rock.
In interviews, the band members have often reflected on the joy of creating music that resonated with so many people. Noddy Holder has spoken about the thrill of performing live and the connection they felt with their audience, which is palpable in the energy of the tracks on *Sladest*. The camaraderie among the band members is evident, and it’s clear that their passion for music was a driving force behind their success.
*Sladest* is not just a compilation; it’s a celebration of a band that knew how to have fun and connect with their fans. The album has stood the test of time, influencing countless artists and remaining a beloved staple in the rock genre. For anyone looking to dive into the world of glam rock, *Sladest* is an essential listen, capturing the exuberance and spirit of a band that truly knew how to rock. Whether you’re a long-time fan or a newcomer, this album is sure to leave you feeling uplifted and ready to sing along.
