Description
Slade’s 1981 album, *Till Deaf Do Us Part*, is a fascinating chapter in the band’s storied career, showcasing their evolution while still holding onto the raucous spirit that made them icons of the glam rock era. Released during a time when the music landscape was shifting, this album finds Slade navigating the waters of new wave and hard rock, all while maintaining their signature sound that fans had come to love.
The album opens with the energetic track “My Baby’s Got It,” a quintessential Slade anthem that encapsulates their knack for catchy hooks and sing-along choruses. The song is a testament to the band’s ability to craft infectious melodies, and it sets the tone for the rest of the album. Noddy Holder’s distinctive voice shines through, full of charisma and attitude, while the band’s tight instrumentation drives the track forward with an irresistible energy. It’s a reminder of why Slade was such a formidable force in the 70s and early 80s.
One of the standout tracks on the album is “Run Runaway,” which became a fan favorite and is often cited as one of their best songs. The track features a memorable chorus and a driving beat that makes it impossible not to tap your feet along. The use of a fiddle adds a unique twist, blending rock with a hint of folk, showcasing the band’s willingness to experiment with different sounds. This track, in particular, received significant airplay and helped to solidify Slade’s place in the hearts of their fans during this transitional period.
The production on *Till Deaf Do Us Part* is noteworthy as well. Produced by the band alongside their long-time collaborator Chas Chandler, the album captures a raw yet polished sound that was characteristic of the era. The mix of electric guitars, vibrant harmonies, and Holder’s powerful vocals creates a sonic landscape that feels both familiar and fresh. The album was recorded at the legendary Rockfield Studios in Wales, a place known for its rich history and the many iconic albums that have been produced there. This setting undoubtedly contributed to the album’s vibrant sound.
Lyrically, the album touches on themes of love, relationships, and the struggles of life, all delivered with Slade’s trademark wit and humor. Tracks like “When I’m Dancin’ I Ain’t Fightin’” showcase the band’s ability to blend fun with deeper messages, encouraging listeners to embrace joy and positivity even in tough times. It’s this blend of lightheartedness and sincerity that has endeared Slade to generations of fans.
Critically, *Till Deaf Do Us Part* received a mixed reception upon its release, with some reviewers praising its energy and catchy songs, while others felt it didn’t quite capture the magic of their earlier work. However, over the years, the album has gained a more favorable reassessment, with many fans considering it a hidden gem in Slade’s discography. The album’s ability to resonate with listeners, even decades later, speaks volumes about its quality and the band’s enduring appeal.
In interviews, Holder has reflected on the album’s creation, noting that it was a time of experimentation for the band. They were keen to explore new sounds while still holding onto the elements that made them successful. This desire to evolve is evident throughout the album, as they blend their classic glam rock roots with the emerging sounds of the 80s.
*Till Deaf Do Us Part* may not have achieved the same level of commercial success as some of Slade’s earlier albums, but it remains a vital part of their legacy. The album captures a moment in time when the band was at a crossroads, and their willingness to adapt and experiment is commendable. For fans of Slade and those who appreciate the evolution of rock music, this album is a must-listen, filled with infectious energy and the unmistakable charm that only Slade can deliver.
