Description

2LP - 200g Black Vinyl

King Crimson captured a palpable sense of energy and enthusiasm from the audience during their concert in Fréjus, France, in late summer 1982. Sharing a European tour with their then-label bandmates Roxy Music, King Crimson delivered a performance that highlighted their dynamism and punch, aspects that simply couldn’t be replicated in a recording studio.

With two albums’ worth of material to draw upon—"Discipline" (Oct 1981) and "Beat" (June 1982)—along with extensive touring across the UK, Europe, USA, and Japan, the band was well-prepared to put on a special show. The setlist included classic KC instrumentals like "Red" and "Larks’ Tongues in Aspic Part Two", ensuring a memorable performance.

Originally recorded for a video release, the audio from this concert has never been issued as a standalone release—nor has a live album from the 1980s King Crimson lineup appeared on vinyl until now. "Sheltering Skies" presents the complete King Crimson performance across two LPs pressed on 200-gram vinyl or a single CD, both including the recording of "The Sheltering Sky" from the previous night’s concert at Cap d’Agde.

In 1982, King Crimson was still less than a year old in terms of concert performances and album releases, but the individual musicians’ decades of experience funneled through the enthusiasm and freshness of the new lineup produced a unique concert recording.

With the forthcoming US tour by Beat—featuring King Crimson’s Adrian Belew and Tony Levin, joined by guitarist Steve Vai and Tool drummer Danny Carey—there is increased interest in hearing this material as it was originally performed. This release offers fans a chance to experience the original performances.
