Description
"Supernatural," released in 1999, is a landmark album by the legendary guitarist Carlos Santana and his band, Santana. This album marked a significant comeback for Santana, both commercially and critically, and is often credited with revitalizing his career. "Supernatural" is notable for its fusion of rock, Latin music, and pop, and it features a wide array of guest artists, which contributed to its broad appeal.
One of the most remarkable aspects of "Supernatural" is its commercial success. The album sold over 30 million copies worldwide, making it one of the best-selling albums of all time. It also won nine Grammy Awards, including Album of the Year, and three Latin Grammy Awards. This level of recognition was unprecedented for Santana, who had been a prominent figure in the music industry since the late 1960s but had not achieved such widespread acclaim in decades.
The album's success can be attributed in part to its hit singles, particularly "Smooth," featuring Rob Thomas of Matchbox Twenty. "Smooth" became a cultural phenomenon, topping the Billboard Hot 100 chart for 12 consecutive weeks and becoming one of the defining songs of the late 1990s. Its infectious blend of rock and Latin rhythms, combined with Thomas's charismatic vocals, made it a staple on radio stations and a favorite among listeners.
Another standout track is "Maria Maria," featuring The Product G&B. This song also achieved significant chart success, reaching number one on the Billboard Hot 100. Its blend of hip-hop, R&B, and Latin influences showcased Santana's ability to adapt to contemporary musical trends while maintaining his distinctive guitar sound.
"Supernatural" is also notable for its diverse roster of collaborators. In addition to Rob Thomas and The Product G&B, the album features contributions from artists such as Eric Clapton, Lauryn Hill, Dave Matthews, and Wyclef Jean. This eclectic mix of musicians helped to create a rich tapestry of sounds and styles, appealing to a wide range of audiences.
Critically, "Supernatural" was well-received, with many reviewers praising Santana's ability to blend different genres and his skillful guitar work. The album was seen as a successful reinvention for Santana, who managed to stay relevant in a rapidly changing music landscape. Some critics, however, noted that the album's reliance on guest artists sometimes overshadowed Santana's own contributions.
Beyond its commercial and critical success, "Supernatural" holds cultural significance as a bridge between different musical worlds. It introduced Santana's music to a new generation of listeners and demonstrated the enduring appeal of Latin-infused rock. The album's success also paved the way for other artists to explore cross-genre collaborations, influencing the music industry in the years that followed.
In summary, "Supernatural" is a milestone in Santana's career, representing both a triumphant comeback and a testament to his versatility as a musician. Its blend of rock, Latin, and pop elements, combined with its impressive lineup of guest artists, made it a standout album of the late 1990s. The album's legacy continues to be felt today, as it remains a beloved classic and a testament to the power of musical collaboration.
