Description

Phil’s little bass scoot in the China Cat Sunflower > I Know You Rider handoff is the tell, and RFK Stadium, Washington, D.C. 6/10/73 (8LP) captures the Dead in that relaxed, fluent 1973 glide. The Grateful Dead stretch without strain, turning big rooms into living rooms. Playing in the Band goes long but stays conversational, with Garcia and Weir trading lines that never overstay. Eyes of the World blooms with that early-’73 buoyancy, all swing and sparkle rather than heaviness.

This 8LP edition gives the jams room to breathe; space opens up and the low end sits deeper, so Phil’s melodies and Billy’s kick feel properly anchored. Side breaks are sensibly placed, keeping momentum intact while letting the long forms shine.

File it next to Europe ’72 for songwriting-meets-improv balance, and beside the Allman Brothers at Fillmore East for that warm, guitar-forward dialogue, but the vibe here is looser and sunnier. If you’d prefer to order from home, you can buy Grateful Dead records online with us.

For anyone who wants one full, unhurried night rather than a compilation, this is a rewarding front-to-back listen. It’s a document of a band mid-evolution, already refining the grooves they’d carry through the rest of the decade.
