Description

"True North" by a-ha is a fascinating addition to the band's illustrious discography, released on October 21, 2022. This album marks a significant moment for the Norwegian trio, as it is their first collection of new material since 2015's "Cast in Steel." Known for their iconic 1980s hits like "Take On Me," a-ha has always been a band that evolves with time, and "True North" is no exception.

The album was recorded in Bodø, Norway, and it carries a unique concept that intertwines music with a visual narrative. The band collaborated with the Arctic Philharmonic, which adds a lush, orchestral layer to their sound. This collaboration is not just a backdrop but an integral part of the album's identity, enhancing the emotional depth of the songs.

One of the standout tracks on "True North" is "I'm In," which showcases Morten Harket's timeless vocals. His voice, as always, is a powerful instrument, conveying emotion with a clarity that has been a hallmark of a-ha's music. The song "You Have What It Takes" is another highlight, offering a message of resilience and hope that resonates deeply in today's world.

Critically, "True North" has been well-received, with many reviewers praising the band's ability to maintain their signature sound while exploring new musical landscapes. The orchestral arrangements have been particularly noted for their beauty and how they complement the band's melodic sensibilities. Publications like Rolling Stone and NME have highlighted the album's ambitious scope and the seamless integration of the orchestra.

The cultural significance of "True North" is also worth noting. a-ha has always been a band that transcends borders, and this album is a testament to their enduring appeal. By recording in the Arctic Circle and incorporating themes of nature and introspection, the band connects their music to the broader conversation about the environment and our place within it.

In terms of production, "True North" was produced by Magne Furuholmen, a member of the band, alongside Kjetil Bjerkestrand. This internal production team ensures that the album remains true to a-ha's vision, blending their pop sensibilities with the grandeur of the orchestral arrangements.

Fans of a-ha will find "True North" to be a rewarding listen, as it captures the essence of what has made the band so beloved over the decades. For new listeners, the album offers a fresh entry point into a-ha's world, showcasing their ability to craft songs that are both timeless and timely.

Overall, "True North" is a testament to a-ha's enduring creativity and their willingness to explore new artistic territories. It's an album that not only celebrates their past but also looks forward, inviting listeners to join them on a journey through sound and vision. Whether you're a long-time fan or a newcomer, "True North" is an album that deserves your attention.
