Description
Hockey Dad's debut album, Boronia, released on August 12, 2016, is a vibrant and heartfelt ode to youth, friendship, and the coastal lifestyle that the duo from Windang, New South Wales, embodies so effortlessly. Comprised of Zach Stephenson on guitar and vocals and Billy Fleming on drums, Hockey Dad has a knack for crafting infectious surf rock tunes that feel both nostalgic and refreshingly modern.
The album takes its name from Boronia Street, where the two bandmates grew up as neighbours, and this sense of familiarity and camaraderie permeates the record. From the opening track, "Can't Have Them", the listener is greeted with jangly guitars, driving rhythms, and Stephenson's earnest vocals. It's a song that captures the essence of unrequited love and youthful longing, themes that resonate throughout the album.
Tracks like "Jump the Gun" and "So Tired" showcase the band's ability to balance energetic, upbeat melodies with introspective lyrics. The production, handled by Tom Iansek of Big Scary, is crisp yet retains a raw, garage-band feel that suits the duo's sound perfectly. Iansek's touch ensures that the energy of Hockey Dad's live performances is captured on record, making Boronia feel immediate and alive.
One of the standout tracks, "Laura", is a sun-soaked anthem that highlights the band's knack for writing catchy hooks. It's a song that feels tailor-made for road trips and beach days, encapsulating the carefree spirit of Australian summers. Meanwhile, "Raygun" slows things down slightly, offering a more reflective moment on the album without losing the momentum.
What makes Boronia so endearing is its authenticity. Stephenson and Fleming wear their influences on their sleeves, drawing inspiration from bands like Wavves, Fidlar, and The Drums, yet they manage to carve out a sound that is distinctly their own. The album is a snapshot of a specific time and place, but its themes of friendship, love, and growing up are universal.
Since its release, Boronia has been met with positive reception, earning Hockey Dad a dedicated following both in Australia and internationally. The album's charm lies in its simplicity and sincerity, qualities that have become increasingly rare in an era of overproduced pop music. It's a record that invites you to let loose, reminisce, and embrace the joy of living in the moment.
In conclusion, Boronia is a stellar debut that captures the essence of Hockey Dad's sound and spirit. It's a testament to the power of friendship and the magic of music created with heart and soul. Whether you're a longtime fan of surf rock or new to the genre, this album is well worth a listen.
