"Live In Italy" is one of Lou Reed's best albums to date, containing many fan favourite songs such as "Sally Can't Dance" and "Walk On The Wild Side" This album is a must have for any fan of the New Wave scene.

Lou Reed's "Live In Italy" is a fascinating snapshot of the legendary artist's live performances during the early 1980s. Released in 1984, this album captures Reed's concert in Verona and Rome, showcasing his raw energy and the gritty, no-nonsense rock sound that he was known for.
The album features a selection of tracks that span Reed's career, including some of his most iconic songs. Fans of Reed will appreciate the live renditions of classics like "Sweet Jane" and "Walk on the Wild Side," which are delivered with a fresh intensity that only a live performance can provide. The album also includes tracks from his then-recent studio albums, giving listeners a taste of his evolving sound during this period.
One of the standout aspects of "Live In Italy" is the band that Reed assembled for this tour. The lineup included Fernando Saunders on bass, Fred Maher on drums, and the legendary Robert Quine on guitar. Quine's guitar work, in particular, adds a sharp, edgy layer to the music, complementing Reed's distinctive vocal style. The chemistry between Reed and his band is palpable, and it elevates the live experience captured on this album.
Critically, "Live In Italy" received mixed reviews upon its release. Some critics praised the album for its raw and unpolished sound, which they felt captured the essence of Reed's live performances. Others, however, felt that the album lacked the polish and production quality of his studio recordings. Despite the mixed critical reception, "Live In Italy" has maintained a cult following among Reed's fans, who appreciate the album for its authenticity and the glimpse it offers into Reed's live shows during this era.
In terms of cultural significance, "Live In Italy" serves as a testament to Reed's enduring influence on rock music. By the time of this album's release, Reed had already established himself as a pioneering figure in the genre, both as a solo artist and as a member of The Velvet Underground. This live album reinforces his reputation as a compelling live performer and a master of storytelling through music.
Interestingly, "Live In Italy" was not widely released in the United States at the time, which may have contributed to its somewhat under-the-radar status compared to other live albums of the era. However, this has only added to its allure among collectors and die-hard fans who seek out Reed's more obscure releases.
Overall, "Live In Italy" is a must-listen for anyone interested in Lou Reed's music or the evolution of rock in the 1980s. It captures a moment in time when Reed was experimenting with new sounds and pushing the boundaries of his music, all while staying true to his roots as a rock and roll icon. Whether you're a long-time fan or new to Reed's work, this album offers a unique and engaging listening experience that highlights the power of live music.
