Description

Tracked with Bob Ezrin in Wayne Kramer’s last creative sprint, MC5’s Heavy Lifting hits like a present-tense Detroit report rather than a nostalgia fix. The title track’s riff snarls but leaves air for the rhythm section, and there’s a sneaky snare drag before the first chorus that feels pure Kramer. “Boys Who Play With Matches” rides a wiry lead break that cuts across the groove without showboating, a smart foil to the barbed vocals.

This LP pressing opens the mix up nicely; guitars have more space and the low end sits deeper. You can actually follow the bass movements through the choruses instead of guessing. File it next to The Stooges in your proto‑punk corner and it’ll make perfect sense, but it’s leaner and more contemporary than a museum piece.

Guests drop in tastefully and the Ezrin touch keeps the tempos mean and the hooks un-fussy. If you’d rather order online, you can buy MC5 records online with us. Melbourne folks will appreciate how well this holds a living room volume without turning brittle, but it’s happiest a click or two louder.

For anyone who wants the MC5 spark carried forward with intent, Heavy Lifting earns its place on the shelf.
