Description
Pearl Jam - Binaural 2xLP Vinyl Record
Released in May of 2000, the masterful "Binaural" stands as legendary rock band Pearl Jam's sixth studio album. The music on this album features an experimental sound, primarily evident on songs that utilise binaural recording techniques. The atmospheric tracks, mostly featuring sombre lyrics dealing with social criticism, led the band to convey these themes with images of nebulas in the album artwork.
Following a full-scale tour in support of it's previous album, "Yield" (1998), Pearl Jam took a short break before reconvening toward the end of 1999 to begin work on a new album. During the production of the album, the band encountered hindrances such as singer Eddie Vedder's writer's block, and guitarist Mike McCready's entrance into rehabilitation due to an addiction to prescription drugs. Critically acclainmed, Binaural is a must have for Pearl Jam fans!

"Binaural," released on May 16, 2000, is Pearl Jam's sixth studio album, and it marks a significant point in the band's evolution. Known for their grunge roots and explosive debut with "Ten," Pearl Jam took a more experimental approach with "Binaural," both in terms of sound and production techniques.
The album's title refers to the binaural recording techniques used during its production. This method involves using two microphones to create a 3D stereo sound sensation, which is intended to mimic the way humans naturally hear. Producer Tchad Blake, known for his work with artists like Los Lobos and Sheryl Crow, brought this innovative approach to the album, giving it a unique auditory texture that stands out in Pearl Jam's discography.
"Binaural" opens with "Breakerfall," a track that immediately sets the tone with its energetic guitar riffs and Eddie Vedder's distinctive vocals. The album then transitions into "Gods' Dice" and "Evacuation," both of which maintain the high energy and showcase the band's ability to blend raw rock elements with more polished production.
One of the standout tracks is "Light Years," a poignant song that reflects on loss and the passage of time. Vedder's lyrics are introspective and heartfelt, and the song's melody is both haunting and uplifting. "Nothing As It Seems," another highlight, features a mesmerizing bass line by Jeff Ament and a haunting guitar solo by Mike McCready, creating a moody and atmospheric soundscape.
"Binaural" also includes "Grievance," a politically charged track that earned a Grammy nomination for Best Hard Rock Performance. The song's lyrics critique societal issues and reflect Vedder's ongoing engagement with political themes, a hallmark of Pearl Jam's work.
Critically, "Binaural" received a mixed reception. Some reviewers praised the album's experimental nature and the band's willingness to explore new sonic territories. Rolling Stone noted the album's "dark, moody textures," while others felt that the album lacked the immediacy and impact of Pearl Jam's earlier work. Despite the mixed reviews, "Binaural" has been appreciated by fans for its depth and the band's commitment to artistic growth.
The album's tour was notable for its extensive setlists and the band's decision to release official bootlegs of each concert, a move that was groundbreaking at the time. This decision was partly in response to the rampant bootlegging of their live shows and demonstrated Pearl Jam's dedication to their fanbase.
"Binaural" holds a special place in Pearl Jam's catalog as a testament to their willingness to take risks and push the boundaries of their sound. While it may not have achieved the commercial success of their earlier albums, it remains a favorite among fans who appreciate its complexity and the band's artistic integrity. The album's exploration of themes such as mortality, existential reflection, and social critique continues to resonate, showcasing Pearl Jam's enduring relevance in the rock music landscape.
