Description

Pearl Jam - Riot Act 2xLP Vinyl Record

Released in 2002, Riot Act is the seventh studio album by American rock band Pearl Jam. Taking influences from various genres such as folk, art rock and experimental rock. Lyrically the album deals with themes of mortality and existentialism, with influence from both the political climate after the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks and the accidental death of nine fans during Pearl Jam's performance at the 2000 Roskilde Festival.

Pearl Jam's seventh studio album balances emotive bombast with a taut-sweaty hard-rock attack. The band are masters of their own audio, with soft spots where their emotions can go.

"Riot Act," released on November 12, 2002, is Pearl Jam's seventh studio album, and it marks a significant moment in the band's evolution. Coming off the heels of the more experimental "Binaural," "Riot Act" sees Pearl Jam returning to a more straightforward rock sound, albeit with a mature and introspective twist.

The album was recorded at Studio X in Seattle, Washington, and was produced by Adam Kasper alongside the band. This collaboration brought a raw and organic feel to the album, which is evident in the live-sounding production. The band members have often spoken about the collaborative nature of the recording process, with each member contributing to the songwriting and arrangement, which is a hallmark of Pearl Jam's democratic approach to music-making.

"Riot Act" is notable for its exploration of themes such as mortality, political disillusionment, and personal introspection. The album was released in the post-9/11 era, and the political climate of the time heavily influenced its lyrical content. Eddie Vedder's lyrics reflect a sense of urgency and a call for awareness, which resonated with many listeners during that period.

One of the standout tracks on the album is "I Am Mine," which was the lead single. The song is a declaration of self-identity and autonomy, and it quickly became a fan favorite. Its introspective lyrics and catchy melody showcase Vedder's ability to blend personal reflection with universal themes. Another notable track is "Love Boat Captain," which features a poignant tribute to the victims of the Roskilde Festival tragedy in 2000, where nine fans lost their lives during Pearl Jam's performance. The song's emotional depth and hopeful message of love and healing make it a standout moment on the album.

"Save You" is another track that captures the raw energy of the band, with its driving rhythm and impassioned vocals. The song's urgency and directness are reminiscent of Pearl Jam's earlier work, yet it carries the weight of experience and maturity. "Thumbing My Way" and "All or None" are more subdued, showcasing the band's ability to convey deep emotion through quieter, more contemplative arrangements.

Critically, "Riot Act" received generally positive reviews. Rolling Stone praised the album for its "musical muscle and lyrical depth," while AllMusic highlighted its "intensity and focus." Some critics noted that the album's political themes might not resonate with everyone, but they appreciated the band's willingness to tackle complex issues head-on.

In terms of commercial performance, "Riot Act" debuted at number five on the Billboard 200 chart, and while it didn't achieve the same level of commercial success as some of Pearl Jam's earlier albums, it solidified their status as a band unafraid to evolve and address challenging topics.

One interesting aspect of "Riot Act" is its cover art, which features a sculpture by artist Fernando Apodaca. The artwork, titled "Seated Woman with Child," adds a layer of visual symbolism to the album's themes of vulnerability and resilience.

Overall, "Riot Act" is a testament to Pearl Jam's enduring ability to create music that is both thought-provoking and emotionally resonant. It captures a band at a crossroads, grappling with the world around them and channeling their reflections into a powerful musical statement. For fans and newcomers alike, "Riot Act" offers a compelling glimpse into the heart and soul of Pearl Jam during a pivotal moment in their career.
