Description
A lone tram rattles past as the strings lift and the room goes quiet. Silverchair’s Cemetery 12-inch cut at 45 RPM captures the band’s late-90s pivot to orchestration and restraint. The title track from Freak Show’s gentler corner comes through with extra space, so the swell after the bridge feels cinematic and Daniel Johns’ near-whisper hangs longer than you remember. Cellos sit deeper and imaging is cleaner, which suits the hush-and-surge dynamic.
Cue the quiet intake before the first vocal, then that final chorus bloom, and you’re right back in 1997 with a song that felt brave from a band still in their teens. It sits neatly beside The Smashing Pumpkins’ softer singles, yet the distinctly Australian shade of melancholy is its own gravity. If you’d rather order online, you can buy Silverchair records online with us. The upscaled sleeve art also finally does the single’s design justice compared to the old CD.
Played loud in the living room or late on headphones, it holds its intimacy. For anyone rounding out a mid-90s alt-rock shelf, this is a smart, focused piece that shows how far Silverchair had moved beyond the riff-first stereotype without losing bite.
We make it easy to buy Silverchair records online or pick up a copy in our Melbourne record shop.
