Description
The snapped snare fill before the first chorus of The Door tells you where this single is headed, with swing, crunch and a touch of strut. Silverchair lean into the Freak Show-era heaviness here, with Chris Joannou’s bass punching under Daniel Johns’ Eastern-tinged riff. On a 12-inch cut at 45 RPM, the low end sits deeper and the transients hit sharper, so Ben Gillies’ drums feel properly huge. Its modal main riff brings a distinctive Eastern tilt, riding a loose, swinging backbeat. Johns’ vocal rasp cuts through without getting brittle, and the chorus lands like a shove. There’s a gritty mid-song breakdown and a tom run into the final refrain that make this worth owning as its own piece. If you’d rather order online, you can buy Silverchair records online with us. Around here in Melbourne, we file it alongside Soundgarden’s punchier singles, though Silverchair keep the melodies cleaner and the choruses more immediate. Collectors of the era’s singles will appreciate how this cut lets the verse/chorus dynamics breathe. For a Freak Show shelf needing the swaggering bookend to Freak and Abuse Me, this 12-inch does the job with muscle.
