Description

"True Colours," released in 1980, is the fifth studio album by the New Zealand band Split Enz. This album marked a significant turning point for the band, both in terms of commercial success and musical direction. Known for their eclectic and theatrical style, Split Enz embraced a more pop-oriented sound with "True Colours," which helped them reach a broader audience.

The album was a commercial breakthrough for Split Enz, particularly in Australia and New Zealand, where it topped the charts. It also gained international attention, reaching the top 40 in the United States and the United Kingdom. The success of "True Colours" was largely driven by the hit single "I Got You," written by Neil Finn. "I Got You" became the band's most successful single, reaching number one in Australia and New Zealand and breaking into the top 20 in the UK and the US. The song's catchy melody and relatable lyrics about romantic uncertainty resonated with listeners and showcased Neil Finn's burgeoning songwriting talent.

"True Colours" is notable for its innovative cover art, which featured a laser-etched design that changed colors when viewed from different angles. This unique packaging helped the album stand out in record stores and contributed to its appeal. The album's production, handled by David Tickle, was polished and radio-friendly, emphasizing the band's shift towards a more accessible sound.

In addition to "I Got You," the album features several other standout tracks. "Shark Attack" opens the album with a burst of energy, setting the tone for the rest of the record. "What's the Matter with You" and "I Hope I Never" are other highlights, showcasing the band's ability to blend catchy pop hooks with emotional depth. "I Hope I Never," in particular, is a poignant ballad that highlights Tim Finn's expressive vocal delivery.

Critically, "True Colours" was well-received, with many reviewers praising the band's ability to craft memorable pop songs while retaining their unique artistic identity. The album's success helped establish Split Enz as a major force in the music industry and paved the way for future successes, both for the band and for Neil Finn, who would later go on to form Crowded House.

The cultural significance of "True Colours" extends beyond its commercial achievements. The album is often credited with helping to bring New Zealand music to a global audience, showcasing the country's talent on the international stage. It also marked a shift in the band's lineup and dynamics, with Neil Finn taking on a more prominent role as a songwriter and vocalist.

Overall, "True Colours" is a landmark album in Split Enz's discography and in the broader context of 1980s pop music. Its blend of catchy melodies, innovative production, and distinctive visual presentation make it a memorable and influential release. The album's success not only solidified Split Enz's place in music history but also helped pave the way for future New Zealand artists to achieve international recognition.
