Description
"High Risk Behaviour" by The Chats is a raucous, high-energy album that perfectly encapsulates the spirit of Australian punk rock. Released on March 27, 2020, this debut studio album from the Sunshine Coast trio has been met with enthusiasm from fans and critics alike, thanks to its raw sound and cheeky lyrics.
The Chats, known for their viral hit "Smoko," have built a reputation for their no-nonsense, DIY approach to music. "High Risk Behaviour" continues this tradition with 14 tracks that clock in at just over 28 minutes. The album is a whirlwind of fast-paced, guitar-driven songs that tackle everyday topics with humor and a touch of irreverence.
One of the standout tracks is "Pub Feed," a song that celebrates the simple pleasure of a hearty meal at a local pub. It's a perfect example of The Chats' ability to turn mundane experiences into catchy, anthemic tunes. The track "Identity Theft" is another highlight, with its driving rhythm and witty commentary on modern digital anxieties.
Critics have praised "High Risk Behaviour" for its authenticity and energy. NME described the album as "a ripper of a debut," noting its ability to capture the essence of suburban Australian life. The Guardian highlighted the band's knack for storytelling, calling the album "a collection of short, sharp shocks of punk rock brilliance."
The production of "High Risk Behaviour" stays true to The Chats' garage punk roots. Recorded at the band's home studio, the album maintains a raw, unpolished sound that adds to its charm. This approach reflects the band's ethos of keeping things simple and genuine, a quality that resonates with their growing fanbase.
In terms of cultural significance, The Chats have become emblematic of a new wave of Australian punk. Their music, characterized by its humor and relatability, speaks to a generation that values authenticity over polish. "High Risk Behaviour" captures this sentiment perfectly, offering a snapshot of life through the lens of three young Australians who aren't afraid to speak their minds.
The album's release was followed by a series of sold-out shows, demonstrating the band's rising popularity. Despite the challenges posed by the global pandemic, The Chats managed to connect with their audience through virtual performances and social media, keeping the spirit of "High Risk Behaviour" alive.
Overall, "High Risk Behaviour" is a testament to The Chats' ability to craft infectious punk rock that is both fun and thought-provoking. It's an album that doesn't take itself too seriously, yet manages to leave a lasting impression. Whether you're a long-time fan or new to their music, The Chats' debut album is sure to entertain and energize, making it a must-listen for anyone who appreciates the raw power of punk.
