Description
The Chats - The Chats EP Vinyl Record (Bong-Water Blue Coloured Vinyl)
Originally released in 2016 as a digital download, The Chats self-titled debut EP is now available on Bong Water Blue Coloured Vinyl
The self-proclaimed shed-rock band from Queensland, who began playing together in high school, released their debut self titled EP a month away from graduating. About nine months out of high school, The Chats went back into the studio to record their follow up EP, "Get This In Ya". The second EP sat online for half a year until the band had a viral hit with the music video for their song "Smoko", which racked in millions of views on Youtube in a couple of days. Since then, The Chats have become notorious for their loud and chaotic live shows and their zero fucks attitude and have gone on to release their ARIA top 5 debut full length album "High Risk Behaviour"
The Chats EP, released on November 7, 2016, is the debut extended play by the Australian punk rock band The Chats. This EP marks the beginning of the band's journey into the music scene, showcasing their raw energy and distinctive style that would later earn them a cult following.
The Chats, hailing from the Sunshine Coast in Queensland, Australia, are known for their irreverent and humorous take on punk rock. The band consists of Eamon Sandwith on bass and vocals, Matt Boggis on drums, and Josh Price on guitar. Their music is characterized by its fast-paced, no-nonsense approach, often infused with a sense of humor and a distinctly Australian flavor.
The Chats EP features a collection of tracks that capture the essence of the band's early sound. The opening track, "Yeah Nah," sets the tone with its catchy riffs and straightforward lyrics, embodying the band's laid-back yet energetic style. Another standout track is "Bus Money," which humorously laments the struggles of being broke and needing money for public transport. The simplicity and relatability of the lyrics resonate with many listeners, making it a fan favorite.
One of the most notable aspects of The Chats EP is its DIY production. The band recorded the EP themselves, which adds to its raw and authentic feel. This approach aligns with the punk ethos of doing things independently and staying true to one's roots. The lo-fi quality of the recording gives the EP a gritty charm that complements the band's unpolished sound.
The Chats gained significant attention with their viral hit "Smoko," which was released after this EP. However, the EP itself laid the groundwork for their rise to fame, showcasing their potential and unique style. While "Smoko" brought them international recognition, The Chats EP remains a testament to their beginnings and the foundation of their musical identity.
Critically, The Chats EP received positive feedback for its energetic and fun approach to punk rock. While it may not have garnered widespread critical acclaim or major award nominations, it was well-received within the punk community and among fans who appreciated its straightforward and humorous take on everyday life.
In terms of cultural significance, The Chats have been credited with bringing a fresh perspective to the punk genre, particularly with their distinctly Australian voice. Their music often reflects the experiences and humor of Australian youth, making them relatable to a wide audience both locally and internationally.
Overall, The Chats EP is a delightful introduction to the band's music, capturing their early sound and setting the stage for their future success. It's a must-listen for fans of punk rock and anyone looking for music that's both fun and authentic. The EP's charm lies in its simplicity and the band's ability to convey relatable stories with a sense of humor and a punk rock attitude.
