Description

Tomahawk, the alternative rock supergroup formed by Mike Patton (Faith No More, Mr. Bungle), Duane Denison (The Jesus Lizard), John Stanier (Helmet, Battles), and Trevor Dunn (Mr. Bungle, Fantômas), returned in 2013 with their fourth studio album, "Oddfellows." Known for their eclectic sound and experimental approach, Tomahawk once again pushed the boundaries of rock music with this release.

"Oddfellows" kicks off with the title track, a high-energy and infectious song that sets the tone for the rest of the album. The track showcases the band's ability to seamlessly blend heavy riffs, catchy melodies, and Patton's distinctive vocal style. The album continues to deliver a mix of aggressive and melodic tracks, each with its own unique flavor.

One of the standout tracks on "Oddfellows" is "Stone Letter," a dark and brooding song that showcases Denison's intricate guitar work. The track builds up tension throughout, with Patton's vocals adding an eerie and haunting atmosphere. Another highlight is "White Hats/Black Hats," a fast-paced and intense track that features Stanier's powerful drumming and Dunn's driving basslines. The song perfectly captures the raw energy and aggression that Tomahawk is known for.

While "Oddfellows" primarily leans towards a heavier sound, the album also explores different musical territories. "South Paw" introduces a bluesy and groovy vibe, with Denison's slide guitar adding a touch of southern rock influence. On the other hand, "I.O.U." takes a more experimental approach, incorporating electronic elements and unconventional song structures. These diversions from their usual sound demonstrate Tomahawk's willingness to experiment and push the boundaries of their music.

Lyrically, "Oddfellows" delves into various themes, often with a dark and cryptic undertone. Patton's lyrics are enigmatic and open to interpretation, adding an additional layer of intrigue to the album. The lyrics, combined with the band's dynamic instrumentation, create a captivating and immersive listening experience.

Production-wise, "Oddfellows" is polished and well-executed. The album's sound is crisp and clear, allowing each instrument to shine through. The production enhances the impact of the heavy moments while maintaining the intricacies of the quieter sections. The album's overall sound is cohesive, despite the diverse range of musical styles explored.

One of the strengths of "Oddfellows" lies in the chemistry between the band members. Each member brings their unique musical background and expertise to the table, resulting in a cohesive and powerful sound. The interplay between Denison's guitar, Dunn's bass, Stanier's drums, and Patton's vocals is seamless, creating a tight and dynamic musical experience.

Overall, "Oddfellows" is a strong addition to Tomahawk's discography. The album showcases the band's ability to seamlessly blend different musical styles while maintaining their signature sound. With its infectious hooks, heavy riffs, and experimental tendencies, "Oddfellows" is a testament to Tomahawk's musical prowess and their commitment to pushing the boundaries of rock music.

Fans of Tomahawk's previous work will find plenty to enjoy on "Oddfellows," while newcomers to the band will be treated to a unique and captivating listening experience. This album solidifies Tomahawk's status as one of the most innovative and exciting alternative rock bands of their time.
