Description
Released on July 17, 2012, "Collide with the Sky" is the third studio album by the post-hardcore band Pierce The Veil, and it marks a significant moment in the band's evolution. Following their previous album, "Selfish Machines," which had already garnered a dedicated fanbase, this album took their sound to new heights, blending intricate melodies with powerful lyrics and a mix of heavy and soft instrumentation that showcases their unique style.
From the get-go, the album opens with the explosive track "May These Noises Startle You in Your Sleep," which sets the tone for the rest of the record. The song is a perfect introduction to the band's signature sound, combining Vic Fuentes' soaring vocals with a backdrop of heavy guitar riffs and dynamic drumming. It’s a track that immediately grabs your attention and pulls you into the emotional journey that the album offers.
One of the standout tracks, "King for a Day," features a collaboration with Kellin Quinn of Sleeping with Sirens, and it has become an anthem for many fans. The song's catchy chorus and intense verses encapsulate the struggles of feeling powerless and the desire to break free. It’s no surprise that this track received significant airplay and helped the album reach a wider audience. The chemistry between Fuentes and Quinn is palpable, and their combined energy makes this song a highlight of the album.
Another notable track is "Bulls in the Bronx," which showcases the band's ability to blend heavy instrumentation with melodic elements seamlessly. The lyrics reflect themes of personal struggle and resilience, resonating deeply with listeners. The song's bridge is particularly memorable, featuring a beautiful guitar solo that adds an emotional depth to the overall experience.
The production of "Collide with the Sky" is worth mentioning as well. Produced by Dan Korneff, known for his work with bands like Paramore and The Devil Wears Prada, the album has a polished yet raw sound that captures the essence of Pierce The Veil. The layering of instruments and the attention to detail in the mixing process allow each track to shine individually while contributing to the cohesive feel of the album.
Critically, the album received positive reviews from major publications. Alternative Press praised it for its ambitious sound and emotional depth, while Rock Sound highlighted the band's growth and maturity in songwriting. The album debuted at number 12 on the Billboard 200 chart and was nominated for a Teen Choice Award for Choice Rock Song for "King for a Day," which speaks to its impact in the music scene at the time.
Culturally, "Collide with the Sky" holds a special place in the hearts of many fans, particularly within the post-hardcore and emo communities. The album's themes of love, loss, and personal struggle resonate with a generation that often feels misunderstood. It has become a staple in the playlists of many who grew up in the 2010s, and its influence can still be felt in the music of newer bands today.
In terms of personal anecdotes, Vic Fuentes has mentioned in interviews how the album was inspired by his own experiences and the struggles he faced during that period of his life. This authenticity shines through in the lyrics, making the album feel relatable and genuine. The band’s passion for their craft is evident, and it’s clear that they poured their hearts into this project.
Overall, "Collide with the Sky" is not just an album; it’s a journey through the highs and lows of life, wrapped in a sound that is uniquely Pierce The Veil. Whether you’re a long-time fan or new to their music, this album is a must-listen. It captures the essence of what it means to collide with the sky, to reach for something greater, and to embrace the chaos of life with open arms.
