Description

Johnny Cash's 1987 album "Johnny Cash Is Coming to Town" marked a significant moment in his career. Released under Mercury Records, it was part of his efforts to re-establish himself in the music industry after his departure from Columbia Records, where he had spent nearly three decades. This album, produced by the legendary Jack Clement, showcases Cash's ability to adapt to the changing musical landscape of the 1980s while staying true to his roots.

The album opens with "The Big Light", a track that immediately sets the tone with its upbeat rhythm and Cash's unmistakable baritone. Written by Elvis Costello, the song is a testament to Cash's willingness to explore contemporary songwriting while making it his own. The production is clean and polished, yet it retains the raw authenticity that fans have come to expect from Cash's music.

One of the standout tracks on the album is "Let Him Roll", a poignant ballad that tells the story of a dying man reminiscing about lost love. Cash's storytelling prowess shines here, as he delivers the lyrics with a sense of empathy and understanding that only he could convey. The song is a reminder of Cash's ability to connect with his audience on a deeply emotional level.

Another highlight is "The Night Hank Williams Came to Town", a nostalgic tribute to the legendary country singer. Featuring guest vocals from Waylon Jennings, the track is a celebration of the impact Hank Williams had on the country music genre and on Cash himself. The song's narrative style and vivid imagery make it a memorable addition to the album.

"Johnny Cash Is Coming to Town" also includes a cover of "Sixteen Tons", a classic song about the struggles of coal miners. Cash's rendition is powerful and evocative, breathing new life into the timeless tune. His deep voice and the song's driving rhythm create a sense of urgency and determination that resonates with listeners.

While the album received mixed reviews upon its release, it has since been appreciated for its solid production and Cash's strong performances. It may not have achieved the commercial success of his earlier works, but it remains an important part of his discography, showcasing his resilience and dedication to his craft.

In retrospect, "Johnny Cash Is Coming to Town" serves as a bridge between Cash's earlier, more traditional country sound and the later, stripped-down style that would define his American Recordings series in the 1990s. It captures a moment in time when Cash was navigating the challenges of staying relevant in a rapidly changing music industry, and it does so with grace and authenticity.

For fans of Johnny Cash, this album is a must-listen. It offers a glimpse into a transitional period in his career and features some truly memorable tracks that highlight his enduring talent as a singer and storyteller. "Johnny Cash Is Coming to Town" is a testament to the Man in Black's ability to adapt and evolve while staying true to his roots, and it remains a worthy addition to his extensive body of work.
