Description

PLEASE NOTE: The following album review is general information about the original record release and may not be releveant to this specfic vinyl release for Record Store Day 2024.

"The Best of The Wailers," released in 1971, is an album that captures the essence of the pioneering reggae group during their formative years. This collection, not to be confused with their later compilations, showcases Bob Marley, Peter Tosh, and Bunny Wailer before they achieved international fame, offering a glimpse into the roots of reggae and the early sound that would come to define the genre.

The album opens with "Soul Shakedown Party," a track that immediately introduces listeners to the band's classic reggae rhythm, characterized by its laid-back groove and infectious melody. Bob Marley's distinctive vocals, combined with the harmonious backing of Tosh and Wailer, set a celebratory tone that resonates throughout the album.

"Stop That Train," another highlight, showcases Peter Tosh's vocal lead in a poignant narrative about change and movement, both literally and metaphorically. The track's steady rhythm and compelling lyrics highlight the group's ability to weave storytelling with their unique sound, making it a standout piece in their early catalog.

The production on "The Best of The Wailers" is indicative of the era, with a focus on the natural sound of the instruments and vocals. The straightforward production approach captures the raw energy and spirit of the band, allowing the authenticity of their music to shine through without the need for extensive studio effects.

"Lively Up Yourself" is an early version of what would become one of Marley's anthems in his later solo career. This track, with its uplifting message and vibrant rhythm, exemplifies the Wailers' talent for creating music that is both reflective and invigorating, encouraging listeners to find joy and resilience in the face of adversity.

Lyrically, the album delves into themes of love, social commentary, and spiritual reflection, with the band's Rastafarian beliefs beginning to emerge in their music. Songs like "Trench Town Rock" and "400 Years" reflect the group's awareness of social issues and their desire to use music as a platform for change and unity.

In retrospect, "The Best of The Wailers" is seen as a crucial album in the development of reggae music and the Wailers' own legacy. The collection showcases the band's early experimentation with the reggae sound, blending elements of ska and rocksteady, and laying the groundwork for what would become their signature style.

Overall, "The Best of The Wailers" stands as a testament to the enduring talent and influence of Bob Marley, Peter Tosh, and Bunny Wailer. The album's compilation of early tracks not only highlights the genesis of reggae but also celebrates the rich musical heritage of Jamaica, making it an essential listen for fans of the genre and those interested in the roots of one of music's most influential movements.
