Description
Al Jarreau's "Jarreau" album, released in 1983, represents the apex of the jazz artist's transition into the mainstream pop and R&B space. Having already established himself as a notable voice in the jazz scene in the late 70s and early 80s, this album showcased his versatility and adaptability.
The production is crisp, reflecting the era's polished sound, yet it doesn't overshadow Jarreau's distinctive voice. His vocal acrobatics remain the centerpiece of each track, drawing listeners in with an inimitable mix of jazz scatting, soulful crooning, and rhythmic playfulness.
"Mornin'" sets the mood for the album with an upbeat tempo, lush instrumentation, and Jarreau's unmistakable voice leading the way. The track went on to become one of the defining songs of Jarreau's career, and its optimistic sentiment is a common thread throughout the album.
"Boogie Down" is a clear example of Jarreau’s venture into the R&B sphere, offering a groove-infused baseline and a catchy chorus. It’s a testament to his versatility, proving he can command a pop tune with the same dexterity as a jazz ballad.
The album's mood takes a contemplative turn with "Not Like This", a minimalist ballad that highlights Jarreau's vocal prowess. The sparse piano backdrop allows his voice to shine, weaving a tale of heartbreak and longing.
However, the beauty of "Jarreau" lies not just in its individual tracks but in the album's flow. It's a musical journey that takes listeners through a range of emotions, from the joyful highs of "Mornin'" to the introspective depths of "Not Like This."
While some purists may argue that "Jarreau" steered too far from his jazz roots, it's undeniable that this album introduced Al Jarreau to a broader audience. His fusion of jazz sensibilities with the pop and R&B sounds of the time expanded his fan base, earning him commercial success and critical acclaim.
In retrospect, "Jarreau" can be seen as a brave endeavor, showcasing an artist willing to evolve with the times without completely abandoning his foundation. The album serves as a lesson in the power of adaptability, proving that true artistry can traverse genres without losing its essence.
In conclusion, "Jarreau" stands as a significant entry in Al Jarreau's discography. For those unfamiliar with his work, it provides an accessible entry point, while for longtime fans, it offers a fresh perspective on an artist in his prime. The album not only captures the sound of the early 80s but also encapsulates the spirit of an artist unafraid to take risks and venture into new territories.
