It’s not just an album; it’s a celebration of Midler’s career up to that point, and it’s hard not to feel the energy and excitement that she brings to her performances.
"Divine Madness" was recorded during her 1979 concert tour and features a mix of original songs and covers, all delivered with Midler's unique style. The album opens with the infectious "Friends," a song that perfectly encapsulates the warmth and camaraderie that Midler exudes. It’s a track that invites you in, making you feel like you’re part of the audience at one of her legendary shows. The album also includes standout tracks like "The Rose," which became one of her most iconic songs, showcasing her ability to convey deep emotion through her powerful voice.
One of the most interesting aspects of "Divine Madness" is how it captures the spirit of the late 1970s and early 1980s. Midler was at the height of her popularity, and this album reflects the cultural zeitgeist of the time. It’s filled with humor, wit, and a touch of camp, which are hallmarks of Midler’s persona. The album also features her rendition of "Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy," a classic that she makes her own with her energetic performance. It’s a reminder of her roots in the 1940s music scene, and it’s hard not to tap your feet along with the rhythm.
