Description

Bette Midler's "Divine Madness," released on November 1, 1980, is a vibrant and eclectic live album that captures the essence of her dynamic stage presence and musical versatility. This album is a delightful showcase of Midler's talents, blending her signature humor, theatrical flair, and powerful vocals into a memorable listening experience. It’s not just an album; it’s a celebration of Midler’s career up to that point, and it’s hard not to feel the energy and excitement that she brings to her performances.

"Divine Madness" was recorded during her 1979 concert tour and features a mix of original songs and covers, all delivered with Midler's unique style. The album opens with the infectious "Friends," a song that perfectly encapsulates the warmth and camaraderie that Midler exudes. It’s a track that invites you in, making you feel like you’re part of the audience at one of her legendary shows. The album also includes standout tracks like "The Rose," which became one of her most iconic songs, showcasing her ability to convey deep emotion through her powerful voice.

One of the most interesting aspects of "Divine Madness" is how it captures the spirit of the late 1970s and early 1980s. Midler was at the height of her popularity, and this album reflects the cultural zeitgeist of the time. It’s filled with humor, wit, and a touch of camp, which are hallmarks of Midler’s persona. The album also features her rendition of "Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy," a classic that she makes her own with her energetic performance. It’s a reminder of her roots in the 1940s music scene, and it’s hard not to tap your feet along with the rhythm.

Critically, "Divine Madness" was well-received, with many reviewers praising Midler's vocal prowess and her ability to connect with the audience. Major publications like Rolling Stone highlighted her charisma and the album's lively production. The album was also nominated for a Grammy Award for Best Female Pop Vocal Performance, which is a testament to its quality and Midler's talent.

The production of the album is noteworthy as well. It was produced by the legendary Arif Mardin, who has worked with a plethora of artists across various genres. Mardin’s touch is evident in the polished yet vibrant sound of the album, allowing Midler’s voice to shine while also capturing the energy of a live performance. The arrangements are lush and full, complementing her vocal style beautifully.

One of the fun facts about "Divine Madness" is that it was released during a time when Midler was transitioning from a successful concert performer to a major film star. Just a year later, she would star in the film adaptation of "The Rose," which would further cement her status as a cultural icon. This album serves as a bridge between her early career and her rise to superstardom, making it a significant piece in her discography.

Listening to "Divine Madness" feels like a journey through Bette Midler’s world, filled with laughter, tears, and unforgettable music. It’s an album that not only showcases her talent but also her ability to entertain and connect with her audience. Whether you’re a long-time fan or new to her music, this album is a delightful experience that captures the magic of Bette Midler at her best. It’s a reminder of why she remains a beloved figure in the entertainment industry, and it’s a must-listen for anyone who appreciates great music and performance.
