Known for their energetic and eclectic blend of punk, electronic, and new wave influences, Duchess Says has carved out a unique niche in the music scene, and "Sciences Nouvelles" is a testament to their innovative approach.

The album opens with "Inertia," a track that immediately sets the tone with its driving rhythm and frenetic energy. The band's signature sound is characterized by the powerful vocals of lead singer Annie-Claude DeschĂȘnes, whose dynamic range and commanding presence are evident throughout the album. Her performance is both captivating and intense, drawing listeners into the band's world of high-octane soundscapes.

"Sciences Nouvelles" continues to explore themes of science and technology, a recurring motif in Duchess Says' work. The album's title, which translates to "New Sciences," reflects the band's interest in the intersection of human experience and technological advancement. This theme is woven into the fabric of the album, both lyrically and sonically, as the band experiments with electronic elements and unconventional song structures.

One of the standout tracks on the album is "I Repeat Myself," which features a catchy, repetitive chorus that is both hypnotic and infectious. The song's driving beat and pulsating synth lines create a sense of urgency that is characteristic of Duchess Says' music. Another highlight is "Negative Thoughts," a track that combines punk aggression with electronic experimentation, resulting in a sound that is both raw and polished.

The production on "Sciences Nouvelles" is crisp and clear, allowing each element of the band's sound to shine. The album was produced by the band themselves, showcasing their ability to craft a cohesive and engaging listening experience. The attention to detail in the production is evident, with each track offering something new and exciting for listeners to discover.

Critically, "Sciences Nouvelles" was well-received, with reviewers praising the band's ability to blend genres and create a sound that is uniquely their own. The album was noted for its energy and innovation, with many critics highlighting the band's ability to push the boundaries of punk and electronic music. While the album did not win any major awards, it solidified Duchess Says' reputation as a band that is unafraid to take risks and challenge conventions.

Culturally, Duchess Says has been an influential force in the Canadian music scene, particularly within the Montreal underground. Their music has resonated with fans who appreciate their DIY ethos and commitment to artistic expression. "Sciences Nouvelles" continues this tradition, offering a fresh and exciting take on the band's established sound.

In conclusion, "Sciences Nouvelles" is a compelling and dynamic album that showcases Duchess Says' ability to innovate and captivate. With its blend of punk energy, electronic experimentation, and thought-provoking themes, the album is a standout in the band's discography. Fans of the band and newcomers alike will find much to enjoy in this energetic and engaging release.
