Description
"Elvis Sings Flaming Star" is a compilation album by the legendary Elvis Presley, released in October 1968. This album is a bit of a hidden gem in Elvis's discography, as it wasn't one of his major studio albums but rather a collection of songs that had been previously released in various forms. Despite this, it holds a special place for many Elvis fans due to its unique selection of tracks.
The album was originally released by RCA Camden, a budget label, which means it was priced lower than typical albums at the time. This made it more accessible to a wider audience, especially those who might not have been able to afford the more expensive records. The title track, "Flaming Star," was originally from the 1960 movie of the same name, in which Elvis starred. The song itself is a standout, capturing the spirit of the film and showcasing Elvis's ability to convey emotion through his music.
One of the interesting aspects of "Elvis Sings Flaming Star" is its eclectic mix of songs. It includes tracks like "Tiger Man," which was recorded during the famous 1968 Comeback Special, and "All I Needed Was the Rain," from the film "Stay Away, Joe." This variety gives listeners a taste of Elvis's versatility as an artist, moving from rock and roll to more country-influenced sounds.
Critically, the album didn't receive as much attention as some of Elvis's other works, primarily because it was a budget release and not heavily promoted. However, it has been appreciated by fans for its raw and authentic feel. The inclusion of lesser-known tracks gives it a unique charm, offering a glimpse into some of the more obscure corners of Elvis's vast catalog.
In terms of production, the album doesn't have the same polished feel as some of Elvis's other records, but this is part of its appeal. The tracks were recorded at different times and places, which adds to the album's patchwork nature. This might not be everyone's cup of tea, but for those who enjoy exploring the depths of an artist's work, "Elvis Sings Flaming Star" is a delightful find.
One fun fact about the album is that it was re-released several times over the years, with different cover art and sometimes under different titles. This has made it a bit of a collector's item, with fans seeking out the various versions to complete their collections.
Overall, "Elvis Sings Flaming Star" might not be the first album that comes to mind when thinking of Elvis Presley, but it offers a unique listening experience that showcases his range and talent. It's a testament to his enduring legacy that even a compilation like this can still resonate with listeners decades after its release. Whether you're a die-hard Elvis fan or just curious about his music, this album is worth a listen for its historical significance and the sheer enjoyment of hearing the King in action.
