Description
Released in 1979, "Communication" is an album by Marc Hunter, known as the lead singer of the Australian rock band Dragon. This album represents Hunter's foray into a solo career, showcasing his versatility as an artist and his ability to traverse different musical styles, from rock to pop and new wave influences.
The title track, "Communication," sets the tone for the album with its catchy melody and new wave sensibility. The song features synthesizer-driven arrangements typical of the late 70s and early 80s, combined with Hunter's distinctive vocal style. It's a strong opening that highlights Hunter's departure from Dragon's rock-oriented sound to explore new musical territories.
"Island Nights," another standout track, showcases a more mellow and introspective side of Hunter's music. The song's smooth melody and reflective lyrics create a sense of intimacy and depth, demonstrating his skills as a songwriter and his ability to connect with listeners on an emotional level.
The production of "Communication" is polished, with a clear emphasis on creating a contemporary sound that reflects the musical trends of the time. The use of synthesizers and electronic effects gives the album a modern feel, while Hunter's vocals provide a sense of warmth and familiarity.
"Big City Talk" is a testament to Hunter's ability to craft catchy pop songs. The track features an upbeat tempo and an infectious chorus, showcasing his knack for creating music that is both accessible and engaging. It's a track that would feel at home on both radio and dance floors.
Lyrically, the album covers a range of themes, from personal relationships to observations on modern life. Hunter's lyrics are often introspective and thought-provoking, adding a layer of sophistication to the album's pop and new wave melodies.
"April Sun in Cuba," a song originally performed by Dragon and reinterpreted by Hunter on this album, provides a link to his past while also highlighting his growth as a solo artist. His version maintains the song's infectious energy while adding a new dimension to its interpretation.
In terms of its impact, "Communication" played a significant role in establishing Marc Hunter as a solo artist, separate from his identity as the frontman of Dragon. The album's blend of pop, rock, and new wave elements showcased his versatility and helped to broaden his appeal beyond Dragon's fan base.
In conclusion, "Communication" by Marc Hunter is an album that showcases his talent as a vocalist and songwriter. Its blend of various musical styles, combined with Hunter's emotive and distinctive voice, makes it a noteworthy entry in the landscape of late 1970s music. The album represents a significant moment in Hunter's career, marking his successful transition from a band frontman to a solo artist.
