Description
"Rockin' On" by Shakin' Stevens and the Sunsets is a delightful throwback to the rock and roll era, capturing the essence of the 1950s and 60s with a modern twist. Released in 1972, this album showcases Shakin' Stevens' early work before he became a household name in the 1980s. The album is a testament to the enduring appeal of rockabilly and rock and roll, genres that Stevens and his band, the Sunsets, embraced wholeheartedly.
The album features a collection of tracks that are both energetic and nostalgic, with Stevens' charismatic vocals leading the charge. His voice, reminiscent of Elvis Presley, brings a certain authenticity to the covers and original songs alike. The Sunsets, known for their tight musicianship, provide a solid backing with their lively guitar riffs, steady drum beats, and infectious bass lines.
One of the standout tracks on the album is "Rock Around With Ollie Vee," a cover of the Buddy Holly classic. Stevens' rendition is both faithful to the original and infused with his unique style, making it a highlight of the album. Another notable track is "Tallahassee Lassie," which captures the playful spirit of the era with its catchy chorus and upbeat tempo.
Critically, "Rockin' On" received a warm reception from fans of the genre, though it didn't make a significant impact on the mainstream charts at the time. However, it laid the groundwork for Shakin' Stevens' later success in the 1980s, when he became one of the UK's best-selling artists. The album is often appreciated by rock and roll enthusiasts for its authentic sound and Stevens' passionate performances.
The production of "Rockin' On" is straightforward, focusing on capturing the raw energy of a live performance. This approach gives the album a timeless quality, as if you're listening to a band playing in a small, packed club. The simplicity of the production allows the music to shine, highlighting the talent of Stevens and the Sunsets.
In terms of cultural significance, "Rockin' On" serves as a reminder of the enduring popularity of rock and roll music. During the early 1970s, when the album was released, rock and roll was experiencing a revival, with many artists looking back to the roots of the genre for inspiration. Shakin' Stevens and the Sunsets were part of this movement, bringing the sounds of the past to a new generation of listeners.
Overall, "Rockin' On" is a charming album that captures the spirit of rock and roll with enthusiasm and skill. While it may not have achieved widespread acclaim upon its release, it remains a beloved piece of Shakin' Stevens' discography and a must-listen for fans of classic rock and roll. Whether you're a longtime fan or new to the genre, "Rockin' On" offers a delightful journey back to the golden age of rock and roll.
