Description
The Angels, also known outside Australia as Angel City, have long held their status as one of Australia's premier rock acts, particularly within the hard rock genre. Their 1984 release, "Two Minute Warning," is a testament to the band's staying power and their ability to evolve while retaining their core essence.
At the time of the album's release, the global music scene was witnessing a significant transition, marked by the rise of new wave, synth-pop, and the beginnings of the glam metal movement. Against this backdrop, The Angels' "Two Minute Warning" stands out as an attempt to incorporate contemporary trends while staying true to the band's rock roots.
The title track, "Two Minute Warning," immediately sets the tone for the album. It's a song brimming with urgency and intensity, a reflection of the Cold War tensions of the era. The lyrics touch upon themes of impending doom and the threat of nuclear annihilation, providing a dark backdrop against which the band's powerful instrumentation shines.
"Look The Other Way" and "Underground" are other highlights, with the former being a fast-paced rocker with a memorable chorus, and the latter presenting a more atmospheric, introspective side of the band.
One can't discuss "Two Minute Warning" without acknowledging the masterful guitar work. Rick Brewster's signature guitar solos are a staple throughout the album, serving as a reminder of his instrumental prowess and the band's dedication to rock musicianship.
There's also a significant emphasis on melody in this album, more so than in some of the band's earlier works. Songs like "Small Price" and "Goin' Down" showcase The Angels' ability to craft songs that are not just hard-hitting but also memorable and singable.
The album's production, helmed by Ashley Howe, deserves special mention. Howe, who had worked with artists like Uriah Heep and Queen, brought a polish and sophistication to "Two Minute Warning" without diluting the raw energy that The Angels were known for.
However, while the album showcases the band's versatility and ability to adapt to changing musical landscapes, some purists felt that "Two Minute Warning" leaned too heavily into the 80s production style, with a glossier, more radio-friendly sound than their earlier, grittier albums.
In conclusion, "Two Minute Warning" represents an interesting phase in The Angels' storied career. It captures a band at a crossroads, trying to navigate the evolving musical trends of the mid-80s while staying true to their hard rock roots. While opinions may differ on where it stands within their discography, there's no denying the album's musical prowess, memorable tracks, and its reflection of the times in which it was made.
