Description
The Kills' album "Ash & Ice" was released on June 3, 2016, and it marks a significant return for the duo after a lengthy hiatus since their previous album, "Blood Pressures," which came out in 2011. This album is a testament to their evolution as artists, showcasing a blend of raw energy and polished production that fans have come to love.
From the very first track, "Doing It to Death," you can feel the unmistakable chemistry between Alison Mosshart and Jamie Hince. The song kicks off with a driving beat and a catchy guitar riff that sets the tone for the rest of the album. It’s a perfect opener, encapsulating the essence of The Kills: gritty yet melodic, with Mosshart’s sultry vocals weaving through Hince’s sharp guitar work. The track received positive reviews from critics, with many noting its infectious energy and memorable hooks.
One of the standout tracks on the album is "Heart of a Dog," which features a more introspective and haunting vibe. The lyrics reflect a sense of vulnerability, and Mosshart’s delivery is both powerful and poignant. This song showcases the duo's ability to balance their edgy sound with emotional depth, something that has always been a hallmark of their music. Critics from major publications like Pitchfork and NME praised this track for its lyrical content and atmospheric production, highlighting it as one of the album's high points.
The production of "Ash & Ice" is noteworthy as well. The album was produced by the renowned John Congleton, known for his work with artists like St. Vincent and Modest Mouse. Congleton’s influence is evident in the polished yet raw sound of the album, which feels both contemporary and timeless. The Kills have always had a knack for blending different genres, and this album is no exception. You can hear elements of garage rock, blues, and even a touch of electronic music throughout the tracks, making it a diverse listening experience.
Another track that deserves mention is "Siberian Nights," which has a more laid-back, almost dreamy quality compared to the rest of the album. It’s a beautiful contrast to the more aggressive songs, showcasing the duo's versatility. The lyrics are evocative, painting vivid imagery that draws the listener in. This track, along with others, demonstrates how The Kills have matured as songwriters, crafting narratives that resonate on multiple levels.
The critical reception of "Ash & Ice" was generally positive, with many reviewers noting that the album feels like a natural progression for The Kills. It was nominated for several awards, including a nomination for Best Rock Album at the 2017 Grammy Awards, which speaks to its impact and the respect it garnered within the music industry.
Interestingly, the album's title, "Ash & Ice," reflects the duality present in the music itself. It symbolizes the contrast between the fiery passion of their sound and the cool, collected nature of their songwriting. This theme of duality is something that Mosshart and Hince have explored throughout their careers, and it’s fascinating to see how they continue to develop this concept in their work.
In terms of personal anecdotes, Mosshart has mentioned in interviews that the writing process for this album was quite different from their previous works. They took their time, allowing the songs to evolve organically rather than rushing to meet deadlines. This approach is evident in the album's cohesive feel and the depth of the lyrics.
Overall, "Ash & Ice" is a compelling addition to The Kills' discography. It captures the essence of who they are as artists while also pushing their sound into new territories. Whether you’re a long-time fan or a newcomer to their music, this album is definitely worth a listen. It’s a celebration of their journey, filled with the grit and glamour that has always defined The Kills.
